Vance County High School originally opened in 1970. The original mascot was the Vikings and the colors were navy blue and gold. In 1990, Vance County split into two schools (Northern Vance and Southern Vance). In 2018, the county consolidated back into one Vance County High School and the colors and mascot were rebranded as the Vipers.
