Week 6 NCISAA Preview

As we enter Week 6 of the 2021 NCISAA football season, conference games are coming quickly, and with that being said, this week’s premiere private school matchup will take place in the NCISAA Big South conference with #4 Charlotte Latin headed to #2 Charlotte Christian.

Latin heads into this week at 4-0 with its closest outcome thus far being an 18-point win against NCHSAA 3A Hickory.  The Hawks are led offensively by junior quarterback Justin Wheeler, who so far has completed 58 of 97  passes for 1042 yards with 9 touchdown passes against only 2 interceptions.

The ground attack is led by a committee that features junior Sam Haines (19 carries for 130 yds and 2 touchdowns) and sophomore Neil Savage (42 carries for 150 yds and 1 touchdown).  Senior free safety Daniel Haughton leads the Hawks defensively with 34 total tackles.

Coach Jason Estep’s Knights are led offensively by junior quarterback Logan Fox, who is 29 of 42 passing for 330 yards with only two touchdown passes and three picks.  The running game is led by a twosome threat between junior Kyron Jones (33 rushes for 203 yds and 3 TD’s) and sophomore Ryan Henley (24 rushes for 207 yds and 1 TD).  Defensively,  senior linebacker Drew Waldrup leads the squad in tackles with 20 so far, and senior defensive lineman Wade Gullickson adds 15 total tackles along with 3 sacks.

#3 Providence Day heads west to Arden for a conference matchup with #5 Christ School Friday evening.  The Chargers come in 1-2 after a bye following last week’s scheduled game against St. Pauls was canceled due to COVID-19 within the St. Pauls program.   Head coach Chad Grier’s team looks to get back to .500 following their 53-0 win against the Carolina Bearcats two weeks ago.

Christ School, who is still searching for its first win of the season, continues a very tough 2021 schedule this week.  The Greenies use a two-platoon system at quarterback with junior Tray Mauney (13-25 for 196 yds with 3 TD’s and 1 INT), and senior QB AJ Simpkins (24-47 for 300 yds with 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s).  Mauney is the only Greenies player to rush for a touchdown this season and adds 23 carries for 103 yards.

For the Chargers, all eyes will be on the 6-foot-2, 185-pound sophomore wideout Jordan Shipp.  He has come through big for Providence Day in the first three games with 16 receptions for 208 yards and three touchdowns. 6-foot, 210-pound junior linebacker Keyaan Abdul-Rahim leads the defense with 49 total tackles and a sack in the first three contests.

#6 Harrells Christian heads to North Raleigh Christian to meet the 3-0 Knights in a crucial Big East Conference game on Friday.   The double-wing led Harrells’ rushing game is paced by senior Devin Gardner, who is 135 yds away from 1,000 already on this young season, and brings with him 12 rushing touchdowns.

The Crusaders are averaging 10.1 yds per carry thus far through their first four games.

NRCA, who is having its best start to a season since a 5-1 start back in 2012.  Junior quarterback Conner McGann leads the Knights passing attack with 354 yds on 20 of 34 passing with 6 touchdowns and no interceptions.  Senior receiver Josh Pardo is his go-to target with six receptions for 118 yds and three touchdowns. Sophomore running back Stone McDonald leads them in rushing with 205 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns.  Senior linebacker Grayson Black leads the Knights’ defense with 26 total tackles.

In 8-Man action this week, defending state champion and top-ranked Parrott Academy heads to third-ranked Rocky Mount Academy in what is usually one of the biggest games in the 8 Man division every year.  Between the schools, there are seven NCISAA State Championships at the 8 man level.  Parrott, who has the largest roster among 8-man programs every year, comes into this game with 37 players on it, in comparison RMA only has 19,  but the Rocky Mount squad is littered with quality athletes, so this could be a high-scoring affair.
