Fitzgerald chosen to lead West Iredell football program

West Iredell High School has selected Sean Fitzgerald to lead its football program following a thorough search.

Fitzgerald comes to the school following a very successful six-year stint as an assistant coach at neighboring Lake Norman.

He replaces Matt Wilson who departed following the 2023 season to take the reins of the Newton-Conover football program.

The task of selecting a new head football coach was something that the school administration did not take lightly. “Being a former coach myself, I don’t take this task lightly,” states West Iredell principal Benjamin Johnson. “We put in a lot of work over the winter break to get to this point.”

Johnson adds, “He checks all the boxes of what our student-athletes need as a football coach and what we need to move our program forward.”

Fitzgerald played college football at Mars Hill College in Western North Carolina.  After graduation, he accepted a teaching and coaching job at Newton-Conover where he stayed for eight years and followed that up with six years as the offensive line coach, offensive coordinator, and strength and conditioning coach for Lake Norman.
