NCISAA Week 5 Preview: Rabun Gap, Christ School, and Providence Day face big challenges on Friday

This week, Buncbome County is the spot for the top NCISAA football game as Rabun Gap Nacoochee travels north up U.S. Highway 23 to take on Christ School, located in Arden.

Top-ranked Rabun Gap is coming off an unplanned bye week after last week’s game scheduled contest against 4A power, A.C. Reynolds was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.  Christ School is looking to rebound after a heartbreaking 27-21 overtime loss to Maiden, the 4th ranked team in the CarolinaPreps 2A Power Rankings.

The Greenies passing attack is led by senior quarterback A.J. Simpkins, who is has completed 20 of 38 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns, and two interceptions.  Through the first two games, Tray Mauney is leading the team in rushing with 79 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown.

Senior quarterback Aiden Semo leads the air attack for Rabun Gap, completing 25 of 55 passes for 413 yards, along with 5 touchdowns through the air and two interceptions.  One of Semo’s favorite targets, senior wideout Tucker Holloway leads the Eagles in the receiving category with 8 catches for 196 yards and two scores.

On the ground for the Eagles,  junior backs Clement Niyokindi and Yunas Altinicar have combined for 622 yards on 55 carries, adding in four touchdowns.  This is a huge conference game with early playoff implications on the line.

Providence Day is coming off a blowout win over the Carolina Bearcats last week, but Friday they’ll travel east to St. Pauls to face last year’s 2AA state runner-ups.  The Chargers come into this matchup led offensively by senior quarterback Grantt Logan, who has completed 64 of 111 passes for 759 yards and six touchdowns, and an impressive zero interceptions.  Logan is also leading the team in rushing with 106 yards on 25 carries with two more touchdowns on the ground.

6-foot, 210-pound junior Keyaan Abdul-Rahim leads the Chargers with 49 total tackles and one sack in the first games.

Fayetteville’s Trinity Christian will host a Big East Independent Football Conference game against longtime NCISAA East power Ravenscroft.

Trinity Christian comes into its second game of the season with a 1-0 record following an impressive 40-8 win against the Sandhills Titans last Friday. The Crusaders are led by freshman quarterback Donavan Pauling-Outlaw who was 5-for-11 with 101 yards through the air and two touchdown passes to just one pick. He also rushed five times for 51 yards.  Nehemiah Williamson, a senior running back rushed for 66 yards on just four carries and added a touchdown as well.

Veteran Ravens coach Ned Gonet’s squad comes in 2-1 after a hard-fought 17-14 win last week in Raleigh against VISAA power, North Cross School.  The Ravens are led by the 6-foot-4 junior quarterback Kyle Hawkins, who is 46-87 for 522 yards on the season but has no touchdowns and two interceptions.  Anthony Melvin, the reliable senior running back has rushed for 291 yards on 43 carries and six rushing scores.

Rocky Mount Academy (4-0) heads to  Cary Christian (2-1) on Friday for a huge Big 8 Conference match-up.  Rocky Mount, who did not play football last season due to COVID-19 protocols is off to a fast start, and the Eagles offense is led by junior quarterback Wells Hutson, who is 25 of 41 passes for 621 yards and a whopping 12 touchdowns with no interceptions. Isaac Lewis, a junior running back has rushed for 405 yards on 43 carries with a lone touchdown.  Lewis also leads them defensively with 25 total tackles, two sacks, and an interception that he returned  40 yards for a defensive touchdown.

Cary Christian, who comes in following a 57-40 defeat to top-ranked Parrott Academy last week, looks to get back in the win column in another huge matchup for the Knights.
