4A Women’s Lacrosse: Cardinal Gibbons wins third championship in a row

DURHAM – The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders earned their third straight NCHSAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship and seventh overall with a 19-7 win against Charlotte Catholic on Friday evening at Durham County Memorial Stadium.

The Crusaders are now 7-1 all time in NCHSAA Championship Matches and 5-0 in Championship Matches against the Cougars. Charlotte Catholic is 2-7 in Championship Matches, having last won in 2014.

The Crusaders struck first as Rocky Phelps scored the opening goal at the 7:08 mark in the first. The Cougars tied things up at 1-1 thanks to a goal from Mary Catherine Farley but Ella Grimes put the Cardinal Gibbons in front 2-1 and the Crusaders never looked back. They led 10-3 at halftime and stretched that out to 15-5 by the end of the third.

Cardinal Gibbons  was led by Charlotte Jackson as she racked up six goals and four assists and was name Most Valuable Player for her efforts. Grimes added five goals and Caroline Mullahy, Jane Bailey Ward, Izzi Hammond and Phelps all had a pair of goals.

For the Cougars, Farley and Kate Daniels each had three goals and Zoe Pounder chipped in another.

Cardinal Gibbons finished the year 20-4 and on a 16-game winning streak. Charlotte Catholic ended the 2024 campaign 19-8.

4A Men’s Lacrosse: Green Level tops Lake Norman in overtime for first title

DURHAM – The Green Level Gators battled the rain and the Lake Norman Wildcats on Friday night at Durham County Memorial Stadium and ended the 2024 season as NCHSAA 4A Men’s Lacrosse Champions. The win is the first lacrosse championship for Green Level and comes in the school’s first trip to the championship match.

The Gators built an early lead, going up 3-1 in the first and ultimately leading 8-5 going into the fourth quarter. Lake Norman rallied in the fourth and outscored Green Level 5-2, including a run of four unanswered goals, to force the extra frame.

The game-tying goal from Haydon Chichon, came with just four seconds left on the clock.

In overtime, Austin Hryn scored the game-winner with an assist from Gus Maggio with 2:31 left on the clock. The goal was Hryn’s fourth of the game and he was named the Most Valuable Player for the contest. Jackson Spells added two goals and two assists for the Gators.

For the Wildcats, Chichon scored three goals as did Cannon Wiggington and Brandon DeBarardinis.

The championship match was a rematch of tight, early-season nonconference match which the Gators won 8-7 on March 9.

The Gators finished the season 22-2 and Lake Norman ended the year 18-6. Lake Norman is now 2-4 in championship matches.

The 1A/2A/3A Championships will take place on Saturday with the Women’s Championship Match scheduled for 11 a.m. and the Men’s Championship Match at 2 p.m.

2A Track: Cummings Women, T.W. Andrews Men win 2A Track and Field Titles

GREENSBORO – Traditional powers Cummings and T.W. Andrews added more hardware to their trophy cases on Friday at the Marcus T. Johnson Track at North Carolina A&T University. Both the Cummings women and the T.W. Andrews men defended their 2023 championships and Andrews now has 10 men’s titles and Cummings has 18 women’s titles.

In the Women’s Championship, Cummings racked up 103 points, more than 60 points ahead of the North Carolina School of Science and Math in second place. The Bulldogs were led by D’Anna Cotton. Cotton won the triple jump, high jump, the 100-meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles to earn the Most Outstanding Performer Award. Cotton was also the Most Outstanding Performer at the 1A/2A Indoor Championships earlier this year.

Cummings’ Diamond Moore won the long jump and took second in the triple jump. Cummings also won the 4×200 meter relay.

Catherine Parker won the 3200, the 1600 and the 800  to lead NCSSM Durham. The Unicorns also won the 4×800 relay. Pine Lake Prep came in third place with 38 points, Whiteville finished fourth and Northeastern took fifth.

In the Men’s Championship, T.W. Andrews tallied 98 points, 46 points ahead of East Burke in second place with 52 points. The Red Raiders were led by Correy McManus and Ja’Neil Harris as McManus won the 100 meter and Harris took second and the flip-flopped places in the 200. Andrews also won both the 4×200 and 4×100 relays.

Jeremiah King also turned in a strong performance to the Red Raiders, taking second in the 300 meter hurdles and third in the 100 meter hurdles.

The runner-up Cavaliers were led by Kenneth Byrd as he won the long jump, the 110 meter hurdles and took second in the high jump. He was named Most Outstanding Performer for the fourth time in his career (twice at indoor and now twice at outdoor).

Seaforth finished in third powered by Jack Anstrom’s wins in the 3200 and 1600 meter races. Will Cuichi added win in the 800 meter.

4A Track: Mallard Creek, Rolesville claim 4A Track and Field Titles

GREENSBORO – The Mallard Creek Men and the Rolesville Women both topped the team leaderboards by tight margins to win 4A NCHSAA Track and Field Championships on Friday at Marcus T. Johnson Track at North Carolina A&T University.

In the women’s competition, Rolesville won their first women’s Track and Field NCHSAA state championship by one point over three-time defending champion Cuthbertson. The Rams were led by Joslyn Hamilton, who won the 100 meter hurdles, the 100 meter dash and the 300 meter hurdles. Hamilton was named Most Outstanding Performer for her efforts on Friday.

Rolesville also took third in both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

Cuthbertson was led by Charlotte Bell as she won both the 800 and 1600 meter races. The Cavaliers swept the top three spots in the 1600 as Justin Preisano and Stella Kermes took second and third, respectively. In the 800, Kermes took second and Preisano finished fourth.

Clayton finished in third place in the team standings thanks to wins in the 4×200 and 4×100 relays. Mallard Creek took fourth and Mount Tabor and Hillside tied for fifth.

In the men’s competition, Mallard Creek won its second title and first since 2015, by five points over second place Weddington. The Mavericks were led by Tyson Williams, who won the 200 meter and took second in the 100 meter. He was named Most Outstanding Performer of the meet.

The Mavericks also won the 4×200 relay and took second in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

Runner-up Weddington was powered by Christopher Stewart’s win in the shot put, and his third place finish in the discus. Eli Clark added a win in the pole vault and Weddington also won the 4×800 relay.

Cuthbertson took third place in the team standings and Parkland finished fourth. Reagan rounded out the top five.
