Asheville Cougars have always had a rich gridiron tradition

Originally built in 1929, Asheville High School not only is one of, if not the most beautiful school buildings in the state of North Carolina, but quite possibly one of the most gorgeous and picturesque schools in the nation.

The school was known as Lee Edwards High School from 1935 through 1969 and was then renamed Asheville High School in 1970.

There are multiple major college and NFL players who have suited up for the Cougars, but possibly none more heralded than Charlie “Choo-Choo” Justice who starred on the prep gridiron in the early 1940s before becoming the most decorated player in the history of the University of North Carolina.

Additionally, you’ll want to check out the gallery of photos of Asheville Memorial Stadium.  It’s without a doubt one of the best in the state.
