At times, one of the most dominant programs in the history of North Carolina High School Football, Hugh M. Cummings High School in Burlington has a very storied history on the prep gridiron.
From their earliest days of existence, Cummings was a force to be reckoned with on fall Friday nights. Whether in the early years when Hall of Fame coach Bob Paroli was patrolling the sidelines; or later on in the 1980s and 90s when Hall of Fame coach Dave Gutshall brought a passing attack that was well ahead of its time, Cummings has always been a top-level program in our state.
Steve Johnson took over the program in 1993 and carried the Cavaliers football tradition on into the 21st century.
Cummings has produced a who’s who list of elite quarterbacks and receivers who are still very prominent in the NCHSAA record books.
Former Cummings quarterbacks Ernest Tinnen, Donnie Davis, Chuckie Burnette, Freddie Parker, and Drew Williamson still own very prominent spots in the state passing record books, and wide receivers Jamie Harris, Maurice Mebane, Ray Griffis, Jeremy Mebane, Lee Crawford, Ron Brown, Bryan Manning, Anthony Daye, Dwight Jones, and most recently Jonathan Paylor will go down as some of the most dangerous, and most athletic deep-threat receivers in N.C. prep football history.
Cummings won state championships in 1988, 1990, 1992, 2002, and 2006 and were state runner-up finishers in 1989, 1993, 2001, and 2003.
