The city of High Point has an important place in North Carolina history. It is one of the commercial hubs of the Piedmont Triad region, and among the most populated major cities in the state. Founded in 1865, it was at the highest railroad elevation point between Charlotte and Goldsboro, and sat at the intersection of the Great Western Plank Road.
Erected in 1927, the Collegiate Gothic architecture styled High Point Central High School is among the oldest schools in North Carolina and has a very rich history on the North Carolina Prep Gridiron.
The mid-to-late 1990’s is where the Bison saw their greatest success. Under the direction of the late Gary Whitman, the Bison rolled to the 1999 NCHSAA 2A State Championship, posting a 15-0 record and defeating Southwest Onslow in the title game.
The Bison won the 1979 4A State Championship with Ron Krall as their head coach.
