Stadium Spotlight Tour: Mitchell County

We’re 104 days away from the start of the 2023 High School Football season in North Carolina, so to get you ready for the first Friday night kickoff of the season, I’m going to start showcasing some of my favorite stadiums across the state.

First on the list is one of my favorites, and one of the best environments in the entire state when it comes to an incredible Friday night experience.

Mitchell County Memorial Stadium is just a great place to watch a prep gridiron game.  Head football coach Travise Pitman always has the Mountaineers in the championship hunt with a solid squad, but between the incredible views of the surrounding mountains, the tasty treats at the concession stands, and the friendly, yet passionate, and even sometimes rowdy football fans; this makes for one amazing game night experience.

Nestled high atop the school campus, and surrounded by trees and mountain tops, the stadium is one of the highest-altitude venues in the state.  Just the walk from the parking lot alone is a pretty good hike!  But once you’re settled in for the big game, the energy can be felt from both sides of the field.  If you want my advice, be sure to visit the Toe River Rivalry game between Mitchell and neighboring Mountain Heritage.  I’ve been lucky enough to experience this game a handful of times over the past decade, and twice at Mitchell.

The pregame experience alone is worth the price of admission.  Watching the Mountaineers come out of the treeline and down the hill into the stadium is enough pregame pageantry to give you chills.

So do yourself a favor, take a trip up to Mitchell County and enjoy this wonderful venue for High School Football, and tell them I sent you!
