Union Pines, Lake Norman Charter win Lacrosse Titles

Union Pines wins first NCHSAA Women’s Lacrosse Title

DURHAM – The Union Pines Vikings completed their perfect season with a 20-6 win against Bishop McGuinness in the 1A/2A/3A Women’s Lacrosse Championship Match at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings finished the year 18-0 and earned their first NCHSAA Lacrosse Championship in their Championship Match debut. Bishop McGuinness finished 2024 19-3 and is now 0-2 in Championship games.

Union Pines scored the first three goals of the day and never trailed. Anna Gaab opened the scoring and Addison Volitis added two more before Bishop McGuinness found the scoreboard. The Vikings led 7-2 after the first and 14-4 at halftime.

Janie Spicer scored three times for the Vikings and also had four assists. She was named MVP for her efforts. Ellie Powell had a game-high six goals and added a pair of assists. Gaab and Volitis finished the game with three goals apiece.

For the Villains, Ella Suire and Kiersten Varner each scored three goals and Allison Varner added an assist.

The NCHSAA is committed to promoting and highlighting outstanding sportsmanship and has partnered with North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance to recognize one athlete from each team who has displayed the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the year. The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 1A/2A/3A Women’s Lacrosse Championship were Caroline Duggan from Bishop McGuinness and Janie Spicer from Union Pines.

Knights three-peat as 1A/2A/3A Men’s Lacrosse Champs
DURHAM – The Lake Norman Charter Knights won their third consecutive NCHSAA 1A/2A/3A Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon at Durham County Memorial Stadium with a 16-7 win against the Orange Panthers.

The Knights took control of the game with two quick goals just before the half to take a 4-3 lead into the break. After halftime, they quickly added three more, all by Tyler Price, including a diving effort, to push the lead to 7-3 less than three minutes into the third quarter. By the end of the quarter, the lead had ballooned to 11-3.

Price was named MVP of the game as he finished with eight goals and two assists.

The Panthers rallied at the start of the fourth quarter with goals from Matthew Macneir and Gray Crabtree but the Knights responded and kept Orange at arm’s length the rest of the way.

Lake Norman Charter ended the 2024 season 15-8 and are now 3-0 in Championship Matches. The Panthers finished the year 24-2 and made their Championship Match debut on Saturday.
