Union Pines High School held a press conference today announcing the hiring of Bryan Till as their new head football coach. Till brings an impressive coaching resume with him to Cameron, most recently serving as the head football coach at Richmond County.
He experienced a lot of success in his seven years at Richmond and guided the Raiders to a 55-23 overall record, which includes an impressive 13-1 mark in the 2019 season, but in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, their participation numbers declined and the program began to struggle.
Stating a desire to work closer to his home in Moore County, Till is excited about the opportunity to work closer to his family, but also to play a major role in his community.
“Foundationally, the big thing we’re going to do, we’re going to build strong young men who will contribute to their community, to learn what hard work is, and what it’s going to take to be great in anything they do in life,” he energetically states. “If we do that successfully, then football will be successful.”
With an emphasis on weight training, he feels that the program will have to grow in the weight room for the Vikings to see the desired results on the gridiron, especially in a very competitive conference.
“The thing you’ve got to do is that you’ve got to start working on how to compete,” he stresses. “It doesn’t matter where we’ve been as a program, the past is in the rearview mirror, the windshield is a lot bigger than the rearview mirror for a reason, you have to start believing, we’ve got to focus on ourselves, and not worry about the competition.”
A native of Georgia, Till brings a high level of enthusiasm to the Union Pines program and has created a buzz throughout the community. Principal Andy McCormick understood the importance of making a splash with a strong hire but also recognized the intangibles that Till brings to the school.
“Right off the top was his experience and the effort that he puts into coaching and teaching,” McCormick adds on why he selected Till. “I’ve been following his career for a long time, he just does it right. But the biggest thing is what he does in the weight room, we’ve got to get bigger, faster, and stronger, limit mistakes, and take advantage of the smart kids we have here at Union Pines.”
Till’s overall coaching record is 97-57 which also includes stops in Cumberland County at Cape Fear and Terry Sanford. He plans to hit the ground running immediately and has already begun his new role as a physical education teacher for the school.
