Concord,Piedmont, and Carson held a scrimmage. Piedmont looked like the class of the three teams.Carson held their own in the scrimmage. Concord was a distant 3rd in the scrimmage. The Spiders who went 1-10 last season will struggle to improve on that record this season.

Overall NW Cabarrus looked like the best team to me tonight - They got the speed, size and i thought there defense held their own vs Statesville and i Thought NW Cabarrus did well holding statesville at times

Mooresville: They didnt look bad and we did some good things, We did a lot swing out passes and some mid-deep passes that were dropped a few times, I think Defense did OK we struggled a little bit with SI run game esp to the left side but Mooresville did get a Turnover and a Sack and did some good things as well. I think Mooresville has some work to do but I liked what I seen so far

Statesville: They did decent vs NWC, I thought some of their passes we off target at times. I think Statesville did get a few TDs and Turnovers at times vs Northwest Cabarrus and Statesville has a Solid defense but I think they will have work hard on their O LINE And i think Defense did Well but gave up some stuff to NW Cabarrus. I think Statesville will be FINE

South Iredell: I think SI has a lot of potential but time will tell. they got some good size on the line and their JV look solid as well. I think they did good on some runs vs Mooresville and Did get some stops on Mooresville but I think they gotta get a QB figured out and their skilled players will have to do well. I think their O line n D line look solid so If their Skill players can make plays this yr I think they will have success

Heading up to Ragsdale today to watch them take on Northern Durham.  ND's a team that I wanted to see last season but didn't.  I hear they have a very good defensive line.

Not a bad scrimmage yesterday.  They started out with a little 7 on 7, did some drills/situations, and then got into live action for the last hour or so.  I'll start with Ragsdale.....

The Tigers are going to be alright.  Alston Hooker could be a huge difference maker for them. He threw some nice balls yesterday (including a beautiful long TD down the right side).  He's also got three/four decent receivers to hook up with (including Mr. Boykin).  Ragsdale's got good size in the trenches.  Their D-line did a good job of getting to Northern's QB.  The Ragsdale D overall looked fairly good.  They gave up a couple of long TD runs (however both, I believe, were called back).  I was fairly impressed with Tiger RB #28.  He ran really hard.

....and then there's Devan Boykin.  He made some awesome moves yesterday.  It was a lot of fun watching him in the one-on-one drills.  He even lined up at QB a little.  The Tigers will be able to use Boykin in a myriad of ways.

I loved the energy that the Ragsdale JV's brought.  Those guys were chomping at the bit to get in there.  When they did get in there, they played with passion and hit hard.  I think they'll have a good year.

Ragsdale's going to be a factor in that Metro race.  For most teams, they won't be an easy out.  They'll definitely be fun to watch on O.

As for Northern......

Good numbers for them.  They definitely pass the eye test.  They have a plethora of athletic guys.  Decent size on the O-line.  Strong three-man front on the D-line.  On offense, they looked decent at times and really shaky at others.  ND kept it on the ground for most of the duration.  They do have a running back who is quick and slippery.  He made a couple of outstanding runs for TD's.  ND QB looked decent.

Northern's JV O-line looked bigger than the varsity.  They had a couple of mammoths out there.

I'm not all that familiar with Northern but here's what I think..........that defense of theirs will probably keep them in a lot of games.  The biggest factor in their success will be how well the offense (in particular, the O-line) plays.  Their biggest tests will probably be Hillside, Riverside, and Southern.

Happy with the way Clinton looked tonight shut out a solid Terry Sanford team 2 scores to none in the Cumberland County Jamboree....oline is big physical RBs looked good and most importantly passing game looks smooth which is something different for us.....defense was solid guys flying around making plays...continue to sleep on this team could surprise alot of people in the 2A East

Heading to North Davidson in a few hours to watch them take on Randleman.

Turns out I didn't see anything.  It either got cancelled or moved.  However......

I am heading to Reidsville today to watch their Jambo.  Starts at 6.  Teams involved: Thomasville, NE Guilford, Eastern Guilford, Rockingham Co., Western Alamance, McMichael, SE Guilford,  and (of course) Reidsville. Should be very good.  Hope the weather's not too hot.

Great turnout at Reidsville the other night.  They had four "games".  Here's a brief synopsis of each......

First up was Eastern Guilford against McMichael.  The Phoenix actually got on the board first.  Then, EG got going and McMic couldn't do anything with them.  The Wildcats hurt the Phoenix in open space with a variety of attacks.  Kamell Smith looked good.  He's going to be very fun to watch.  #17 for EG made an outstanding catch.  Overall, EG looked to be athletic across the board.  Good size in the trenches too (especially the left tackle and left guard).  It will probably come down to them and Southeast for the conference title.

I was plesantly surprised with the Phoenix though.  Their QB looked pretty sharp at times.  Not the biggest guy but he can put some zip on the ball.  Also enjoyed watching #33 run the football.  He's a bruiser.  Overall, the Phoenix are a tad small but have some good size in a few places.  They looked to have quite a few guys going both ways.  I think their chances of success will depend primarily on how their defense plays and also the play of the receiving core.  I hope they do well.

Next was Rockingham County against Thomasville.  T'ville "won" two scores to nil.  Both scores came as the result of awesome runs from the QB #13.  For the first score, he kept the ball, got around the left end, and sprinted down the left sideline about 80 yards.  He looked like a sprinter heading down the home stretch in the 200 meters.

I think T'ville will be alright.  Decent numbers, fairly decent size, and decent athleticism across the board.  I could see them finishing anywhere from third to sixth in the Central Carolina.

Rockingham had a lineman that looked be around 6-8, 270.  Looked like the second coming of Gronk.  Could move too.

Third game was Western Alamance taking on SE Guilford.  SE "won" three scores to one, I believe.  Falcons looked strong on both sides of the line.  Looked good everywhere else on D as well.  On offense, the SE QB really surprised me.  Never seen this guy before....but...he had good size, threw some nice balls, and could scoot when he needed to.  Speaking of being able to scoot......RB Jalen Fairley broke off a nice long TD run down the left sideline earlier on.  SE is going to have a good year.

As for WA.........it's typical WA.  The Warriors aren't all that big but they're fit, disciplined, and have a bag of tricks at their disposal.  RB #21 ran well.  QB looked mobile and good at times.  They'll probably be in the upper echelon of the Mid-State once again.

The final game was Reidsville against NE Guilford.  I had to leave early but when I did R'ville was up two scores to one.  These Rams are going to be really fun to watch.  Pinnix threw two nice touchdowns.  #2 had a great catch-and-run for one of those.  #73 had a good showing on the defensive line.  One of the biggest things that stood out was the addition of Auldon Edwards.  Edwards makes for a big target down the field (he outjumped a defender to reel in a long bomb).  He also played free safety and made a couple of nice plays.  Reidsville gonna Reidsville.

However,  I was pleasantly suprised with the play of the "other" Rams.  Despite fairly low numbers, these guys are tough and physical  They kept it on the ground for the most part and sophomore Trevon Hester ran the ball really well.  Northeast put together a great, long drive for that first score.  I think Northeast could catch more than a few teams off guard.

Piggybacking on Chute since I was at Reidsville for awhile too.

Only saw the last 2 scrimmages & 5–8 minutes of Thomasville/Rockingham.

The lineman from Rockingham is  a Jr, Colby Smith. Listed at 6-7, 280 on 247 & Rockingham has him listed at 6-8, 290. Either way, big frame & definitely a prospect.

The scrimmages were a 60 minutes running clock “game.” Special teams were not live. SEG is an impressive physical squad. The first thing that stood out were their numbers. Probably had 65 on sidelines & this didn’t include JV which was in the stands and had about another 60. They have big lines that move well. Completely agree that Jalen Fairley ran well & the long run he broke down the sideline was impressive as he was 1st grabbed in the backfield. The QB looked pretty good considering he was the backup. The starter went down with an injury right at the start of August practices. Not sure when he returns. I remember 1 dropped pass for sure.  I think the kicker was a freshman (from the chants of the JV players when he made a FG). His leg will get stronger but his kickoffs don’t get real deep. SEG is definitely a threat to go deep in the playoffs again like last year. They “won” the scrimmage with 2 TDs & a FG to Western Alamance 1 TD. Western probably gets another FG or 2 if their All American K is there but he was out of town with a family event. Western Alamance is pretty young & the numbers are down as they only dressed about 35-40 for the game. (An additional 35 or so JVs we’re there for the JV portion). The defense looked pretty solid with the exception of 1 long run by Fairley & 1 long pass that a freshman CB gave up late which set up the second TD as I recall. The offense was a bit spotty but I thought RB Tyrone Slade had good vision & ran hard doing a good job getting yards after contact. The OL has pretty good size by WA standards as they haven’t been big in years. The WRs could have caught a couple balls they didn’t. The QB moved pretty well & showed a good arm but was inconsistent & missed one wide open WR downfield. WA held up well & agree they should be upper tier of conference (EA has to be the favorite) but SEG was better team Friday night.

The 4th scrimmage was Reidsville/NEG. Agree with everything Chute said. Edwards (about 6-3 or 4) who came from Cummings is a nice addition to a Reidsville squad that already had a lot back from a State Championship team. Pinnix, Pass, Canada, Rankin.... this team has some dudes. They can play. I also thought #20 looked good but don’t know his name. I fully expect them to be back in the title game. As for NEG... they acquitted themselves well. Played physical football that is a trademark of Coach Bates team. I thought they looked much improved since last year and they kind of surprised me. They had success moving the ball. Scored once & had another drive ended by an INT in endzone. I think there was at least 1 more score after Chute left. Can’t remember if Reidsville “won” 3 TDs to 1 or 4-1.
