Southern Guilford at Williams

Pretty good couple of games at the haunted house last night.....

Williams is now firmly planted in the Mid-Piedmont driver's seat.  They topped SG 59-52.  Williams outscored SG 22-13 in the first quarter and never relinquished control.  SG made a mini-run now and then but never could get in a good groove.

I thought Williams had a great game plan on defense.  Every time one of SG's main ballers hit the paint, Williams would try to lead them to a dead-end.  As a result, they forced SG into quite a few turnovers and tough, contested shots.  Williams also killed SG on the glass.  SG could not deal with the two Bulldog wide-bodies on the interior.  SG's coach was so frustrated with their lack of rebounding that he lit into his team at the end of the first quarter.

Believe it or not, the best performance of the night wasn't from Nassir Johnson or Kennedy Miles.  Sure, Johnson had his usual smooth performance.  He had a great first half where he was able to get a lot of easy buckets.  And there was a stretch in the third quarter where Miles went unconscious from beyond the arc.  However......

........the main man for the Bulldogs on this night was senior Rashaud Alston.  SG simply had no answer for the undersized forward.  Alston did everything.  He crashed the boards, got easy buckets inside(including an awesome tip-in), made some great interior passes, and played some nice defense.

It just goes to show how important match-ups are.  I had watched Alston the week before against EA and left thinking he was a huge liability.  However, he looked like an all-conference player last night.  Hopefully, he can continue that good play.

SG will bounce back.  They had a fairly rough night from the floor.  Part of that was due to the Williams defense.

The girls game was an absolute "War of Attrition".  SG outlasted the Bulldogs 41-38.  These two teams went toe-to-toe the entire way.  Great chess match between both coaching staffs.  Once again, Ariyah Wheless was the main factor for the Storm.  She also got an assist via a nice performance from Kassidy Haith.  There were periods in the game where Haith carried SG(especially in the first half).
