Northwestern 3A/4A Final Conference week predictions

Can you believe it is already the final week of the regular season? Some big match-ups this week that will effect playoff seeding and if teams will be in or out.

Freedom @ McDowell- Who would have thought this game would be so important for both teams a few weeks ago? Freedom is in a tailspin, getting whacked by Watauga after a surprising upset loss to West Caldwell. McDowell has had a tough season but is still playing hard and is riding high after upsetting West Caldwell. If McDowell wins and South Caldwell loses to Alexander Central, the Titans will be the unlikely NW4A champion. Whether they deserve a home playoff game is another debate but this game may be a close one. Freedom has more speed and size and should pull out a close victory over hard fighting McDowell. The key to this game is if McDowell can open up the passing game vs the pats. The titans have passed for over 200 yards in 2 of the past 3 games.

Freedom 34

McDowell 21

West Caldwell @ Watauga- Watauga really seems to be hitting their stride the past few weeks after blowing out McDowell and Freedom. West Caldwell is a bit of an enigma, beating Freedom but losing to McDowell. One thing West Caldwell has done well most of the season is score (minus the McDowell game) Watauga may have the best defense in the conference and should be a solid 14-20 point favorite at home looking to improve their playoff seed.

Watauga 41

West Caldwell 14

Hickory @ St Stephens- Can Saint sneak into the playoffs? A win here would put them at 5-6 and 4-3 in the conference with at least a tie with Hickory, Freedom and West Caldwell for 2nd. Hickory shocked Alexander Central last week but has shown a lack of discipline and focus after big wins on and off the field. Stephens will be riding high after demolishing South Caldwell and I think they pull the upset here.

St Stephens 35

Hickory 33

Alexander Central @ South Caldwell- Alexander Central is still 1 win away from a conference title  despite last weeks loss vs Hickory. South Caldwell needs to win or hope McDowell loses to Freedom to lock up the 4A side of the Northwestern. I suspect Alexander Central will be looking to play better this week and will have little trouble with the Spartans.

Alexander Central 38

South Caldwell 13

If AC, Hickory and Watauga all win which is the biggest possibility best anyone else can finish is 4th in conference. Most interesting team to me right now is Hickory who lost to Statesville first week of season. Wouldn't want to play Hickory right now.

Not true-If Freedom, AC, Watauga and Hickory all win then AC is 6-1, Watauga 5-2 and FHS and Hickory are 4-3 (everyone else is at least 3-4).  Freedom has the head to head tie-breaker over Hickory, so the Patriots would be 3rd in the standings.  That wouldn't count for playoff seeding (and the Tornadoes are ranked 47th in Maxpreps, while the Pats are 46th, so they might change places depending on how this last week plays out), but it would be used to do stuff like calculate Wachovia cup points.

On another subject I want to commend Hickory High QB Phillips on sticking with the program after all the turmoil over his tenure there. He could have transferred or quit during many lean years but played at a high level. The kid is the heartbeat of Hickory’s success this year. He is smallish as far as today’s QBs go and has brought the Tornadoes from behind with pure determination. He’s been there after many Hickory teammates jumped ship to Freedom, Hickory Hawks, and South Caldwell to name a few. I’ve enjoyed watching this young man play Friday nights.

Watauga and Hickory are currently tied for 2nd in the conference with 4-2 in-conference records, AC is still in the driver seat for Conference champs, but a Lost on Friday would make things interesting

You're right-I misread that on Maxpreps.

FHS Freedom is 3-3 in conference and Hickory and Wautaga is 4-2. So you are incorrect. Again if AC, Watauga and Hickory win that is your top 3. Best Freedom can be is 4-3.

I figured out a wild scenario that could force a 5 way confrence drawing for 2nd place and West Caldwell would get a automatic berth

West Caldwell clinches 2

If they beat watauga st Stephens beats hickory freedom beats McDowell that would create a 5 way confrence drawing for 2nd place lol

Hickory would still get it because they beat the higher seeded opponent within conference in AC

not exactly they could fall to a wildcard depending on the draw if they lose. They should be safe a 46 but a lose and a Newton Conover lose could cripple thier seeding big

Saint's early season woes will not help them get into the playoffs. They are a better team right now than West Caldwell. Although the system will never be perfect, if West Caldwell gets into the playoffs and the Indians do not, it will never be a fair way to reward the better teams.
