  1. Who's the strongest /or pick to go furthest come playoff time?
  2. Well let’s get this one started. Owen coming off a big win over Polk an Friday night and Heritage coming off their home win against rival Mitchell. This one will be played at Mtn. Heritage. I heard there may have been some ejections in this game, that could possibly be a factor this coming Friday. Possibly some of the Owen faithful or Coach Turner can shed some light if this is just rumor or actually an issue. I’m going with Heritage at home 28-7 if both teams are healthy.

    Brevard vs Smoky Mountain

This could be a very interesting match up. Any thoughts?

We get more Tenn coverage than NC coverage.lol...this shows how far west we are! https://newschannel9.com/sports/sideline-wrap-up/impact-game-murphy-vs-swain-county
  5. Former Hendersonville QB Mike Schmidt came up huge for my Air Force Falcons last night. For those of you that didn’t stay up for the late night game like me since I have a rooting interest in my alma mater... Schmidt has been the 3rd team QB this year. The top 2 have been a little banged up on & off and the 2nd teamer didn’t make the trip for the game at Hawaii. The starter went down on the 1st series of the game for Air Force. Schmidt came in and went 5/6 passing for 147 yards and 1 TD. He ran 14 times for 120 yards & 3 TDs. I didn’t realize he had the kind of speed he showed on a 61 yard TD run off the option where he pulled away from the Hawaii DB’s. Made great decisions running the option all night & led Air Force to victory. The announcers couldn’t stop talking about the need to find him a spot on the field even when the starter comes back. Kudos to a NC kid on a great performance.
  6. Big game in Buncombe County this Friday as the Reynolds Rockets travel up to Weaverville to take on North Buncombe. Any thoughts on this Western Mountain Athletic conference battle?

  8. This week has several great games, a couple with serious conference championship implications. Asheville and ACR normally is a great battle but this year the Cougars will struggle with the Rockets. Hendersonville and Smoky will go along way toward the outright MTN6 title. Of course the Toe River War is a huge game in the High Country. Is this the season Mitchell gets over the Green hump? Will Heritage have enough offense to stop the Mountaineers? Game of the Week Murphy @ Swain The SMC title hinges on this game, as it usually does, and the packed house may also witness history. Murphy Head Coach David Gentry is going for a record setting 413th win in this game. Gentry will become North Carolina's all-time winningest coach, passing Jack Holley. There is no more fitting game than this one to break the all-time wins record. These two hated rivals have played 73 times with Swain hold a slight 38-35 edge over the Bulldogs. Murphy @ Swain: 31-28 Roberson at Enka: 41-3 North Buncombe at Tuscola: 34-21 Polk County at Owen: 21-19 Asheville at Reynolds: 41-14 West Henderson at North Henderson: 35-0 Pisgah at East Henderson: 42-6 Avery County at Madison: 52-7 Hendersonville at Smoky Mountain: 27-26 Andrews at Hayesville: 34-27 Brevard at Franklin: 45-3 Robbinsville at Cherokee: 49-7 Mitchell at Mountain Heritage: 28-26 McDowell at Alexander Central: 35-7 Asheville School at Rabun Gap: 34-17
  9. The annual renewal of one of the mountains fiercest rivalry games. This game has been stellar for decades. Swain leads the series 38-35 overall but tonight is special. Murphy Head Coach David Gentry tries to set the all time wins record in NC. Beating Swain County would be a perfect end to this quest. Post your thoughts fellas.

  11. Huge game this week in Bryson City as Murphy visits Swain County. Not only are these two of the top three teams in the SMC, but Murphy head coach David Gentry is going for the all-time coaching record in NC passing legend Jack Holley. I know Btango and myself are considering coming up for this one, should be a huge game. I haven't been to a Murphy/Swain game since around 2010. What's your thoughts on this contest?
  12. Not sure how long Brevard will be able to hold onto him but talking about “resurrecting a program from the dead”. What a job he has done over the last few years with that program. I’m not sure a ton of people know how “dead in the water” that program was before he got there. For a few years it was without a doubt the worst program in WNC. Although the athletes are not the same as what they once were coming out of that program, he is now putting respectability back into the program and producing “Brevard “ standards again. No matter how the rest of the season shakes out he has done a tremendous job this year.

    Franklin @ Hendo

I see Franklin is not having the best year to start. Have they changed coaches, philosophies, personnel etc? They are usually very competitive but seem to be struggling right now. I know that my bearcats need to get it going and fast. Offensively it just isn't as crisp as it usually tends to be. Not sure what the reason for it is, but whatever it is, I hope they got it figured out over the bye. Defensively, the team is nasty!!!!! Playing well and holding teams down, just have to to get the offense clicking. Good news is we played a fairly tough non conference schedule and split, had a bye and now we are on to the games that mean the most....conference. Hopefully my bearcats will come out ready to play some good football in front of the homecoming crowd!!!!
  15. After a week off here we go again. Game of the Week this week is Smoky Mountain at Pisgah. The Mustangs head coach Ricky Brindley returns to Canton for the first time since leaving the Black Bears a season ago. I fully expect a near Tuscola-like crowd for this one. The Mountain 6 title hinges on this game. Pisgah is looking to knock the upstart Mustangs back to earth and Smoky is out to prove it belongs. Smoky Mountain at Pisgah: 23-17 Another interesting match up is Heritage and Avery. Can the Cougars bounce back and stop the high flying Vikings? Can Avery pull the upset and make huge waves in the Western Athletic Conference? Hayesville at Murphy: 34-12 Asheville School at Victory Christian: 22-16 Erwin at Roberson: 42-21 Enka at West Henderson: 49-6 North Henderson at North Buncombe: 33-3 Mitchell at Owen :41-14 Madison at Polk County: 44-6 Franklin at Hendersonville: 35-7 Tuscola at Asheville: 24-20 Cherokee at Andrews: 28-24 East Henderson at Brevard: 49-3 South Caldwell at McDowell: 31-8 Swain at Rosman: 52-3 Mountain Heritage at Avery County: 41-31
  16. Well its finally here, Mountain 6 Conference play. Red Hot Smoky Mountain and its group of former Pisgah coaches travels to Mill Town to face their former friends and students in this huge #MTN6 clash. Can Coach Brindley find a way to outfox his former boss or will the old master Brett Chappell teach the student a few new tricks. Smoky (4-2) has an electric offense and is scoring about 42 per game; the Black Bears (4-1) have a stout defense and are only yielding 8.8 per game. I think the key to this game for Smoky will be, can they pass on Pisgah enough to really open up their extremely good running game. For #10 Pisgah it will be putting pressure on a first year QB with accuracy problems and keeping the crowd noise at a deafening level. please jump in with your thoughts as the game goes on.

    WHC week 8

Everyone has wrapped up their non conference schedule, and the conference has looked much stronger top to bottom than in years past. 2 teams enter undefeated, and 3 more above .500. Mitchell (6-0)(0-0) @ Owen (3-2)(0-0) Mitchell has dominated their first 6 opponents, scoring big, and held up by a crippling defense. The starting d has amassed 45 tackles for loss, a staggering 24 sacks, 9 interceptions, and only allowed 1 touchdown. Owen had high hopes entering 2019, but after a rocky start, they are fortunate to be sitting above .500. All being said, they are still a scrappy squad with a good o line, and a smart QB. Home field will give the Warhorses a boost, but look for Mitchell to be firing on all cylinders against their first formidable opponent. Mitchell-42 Owen-14 Madison (0-6)(0-0) @ Polk (6-0)(0-0) Polk has shade it thru their non conference unscathed, looking like a 1aa contender in the process. The offense has been a steady machine, while the defense has been stifling. Madison has been a mess of disfuction this season. They have only mustered 26 points, and have been shutout 4 times. Polk gets a needed easy one for homecoming after a tough stretch. Polk-49 Madison-0 Mountain Heritage (4-1)(0-0) @ Avery (4-2)(0-0) Mountain Heritage was looking like the dominant force they have been, building steam right up until Pisgah handed the Cougars their first shutout defeat in 8 years. Still, a stifling defense has been the highlight of this team, and that defense had only allowed 31 points. Avery has been the biggest surprise of the the season so far, winning the most games since 2014. Troy Hoilman can sling against anyone, and has the receivers to get it to. Although the Viks are putting up huge numbers, their defense has be anywhere from lackluster to nonexistent. Obviously a shootout favors Avery, but they will need to get some stops to compete with the top 3 heavy hitters in conference. Mountain Heritage-30 Avery-21
  18. As I was reading some of these topics like Mitchell Co football I was curious what the highest stadium elevation there is in N.C. I was interested what the elevation for Mitchell Co. is. I’ve been by the high school but never been to any games. I sure Paul Graham and others that live in the mountains have an answer to this. My guess Mitchell would be but I’m not 100% sure. Some day I want to see some of the teams up in that area.

    Mitchell @ Owen

Mitchell should be the favorites here, but no doubt that Owen has been the kryptonite of the Mountaineers for the last 5 decades. This is the first time since 2014 that the Warhorses have entered this game with a winning record. Can they make a game out of it? Or will they get spanked behind the woodshed again?
