    Mitchell @ Erwin

What's everyone's thoughts? Mitchell will have more experience, but Erwin is a 3aa school, they should have enough talent and depth, not to mention home field, to win right?
  2. Well its finally time. Here are games for this week in WNC. jump in and pick your games and lets get this season started with a bang. Pisgah at Murphy, 7 p.m. 33-31 Winston-Salem Prep at Asheville School, 7 p.m. 29-24 Mitchell at Erwin 38-30 Enka at Rosman 27-10 Patton at North Buncombe 21-20 Owen at East Henderson 27-14 East Forsyth at Reynolds 31-21 Roberson at Watauga 42-20 North Henderson at Hendersonville 38-12 East Rutherford at West Henderson 24-21 Madison at Carver 28-20 Franklin at Asheville 21-20 Andrews at Trinity Academy 34-14 Brevard at Mountain Heritage 30-23 Cherokee at Polk County 28-7 McDowell at R.S. Central 27-10 Hayesville at Towns County 24-23 Robbinsville at Smoky Mountain 28-27 Ashe County at Avery County 31-20 Life Christian @ Swain 49-10
  3. Who you got? Andrews at Trinity Academy Cherokee at Polk County Hayesville at Towns County GA Pisgah at Murphy* Robbinsville at Smoky Mountain* Enka at Rosman Life Christian Academy at Swain County *Game of the week Two games of the week. Both of these games are huge for the 4 teams involved and all 4 teams are ranked top ten in the mountains as of now. These to games will tell us alot. Lace em up!!!
  4. This is one of the best games of the opening week with the defending 4A champions traveling west to take on perennial 3A contenders, A.C. Reynolds. I have not laid eyes on Reynolds yet, but having spoke with head coach Shane Laws, he still feels very confident about this team, although they're younger with some new key faces leading the way. I have seen East Forsyth and they still look the part of a state championship team. Any thoughts on this matchup? I think that A.C. Reynolds will keep it close, and being at home should help, but ultimately I see East pulling away late for a comfortable win. COACHING MATCHUP: Shane Laws: 12 years at Reynolds (124-38 record) Todd Willert: 16 years at East Forsyth (136-67 record)
  5. Well it's that time again. Football is finally here so lets get started with some conference picks. Smoky Mountain Conference 1A The SMC title is Murphy's lose. Everyone else is playing for second. I really think the SMC will be far more competitive than the last several years, and about time. 1) Murphy 2) Swain 3) Robbinsville 4) Andrews 5) Hayesville 6) Cherokee 7) Rosman Western Highlands Conference 1A/2A The prohibitive favorite is Mountain Heritage, but, they better ready for Mitchell this year. Owen and Polk can be dark horses this year if teams stumble. 1) Heritage 2) Mitchell 3) Polk 4) Owen 5) Avery 6) Madison Mountain Six 2A The MTN6 will be a slugfest this year. Smoky is making things interesting for the regular contenders, Pisgah and Franklin. Hendo will be good as will Brevard. 1) Pisgah 2) Smokey 3) Hendersonville 4) Brevard 5) Franklin 6) East Henderson The Western Mountain Conference 3A Reynolds should win the WMC this season, but Asheville better not be overlooked. West or Tuscola could slip in as high as second. 1) ACR 2) Asheville) 3) West Henderson 4) Erwin 5) Tuscola 6) TC Roberson 7)Enka 8) North Henderson 9) North Buncombe

    WHC Season Opener (Aug 23rd)

Welp, it's been 8 long months, but its finally football time again in the high country. The 2019 season should see the conference still top-heavy, but also stronger top to bottom. So without further ado, let's dive in. Ashe @ Avery The Vikings enter the 2019 season with nothing to lose. Coming off a 2-9 season under first year coach Mac Bryant, the Vikes look to improve. Returning 10 starters, with decent skill, Bryant should have his system moving in the right direction. Look for Avery to be a pass first team, and if the smallish line can give Hoilman enough time to pass, he can do such with great accuracy. They open up against Ashe, who is coming off a 10-3 season, an MVC title, and a 2nd round appearance. Ashe returns alot of skill, but the line is on the small side, and fairly green. Nonetheless, look for Ashe to take control by halftime. Ashe-35 Avery-14 East Henderson @ Owen Owen won more games last season than the previous 3 combined. The Warhorses are hungry, and after a taste of the playoffs, they want some more. With a fair amount returning, a good sized, and experienced line, and decent skill, anything less than >.500 will be a disappointment. Owen opens up against East Henderson, who are coming off a good rebuilding year themselves. This should be a good matchup, and test for both teams, but home field should be the deciding factor. Owen-27 East-21 Madison @ Carver Madison is, is, *sigh*, Madison. They have no depth, no size, and no skill. I hate to be so demoralizing, but there's no motivation in Marshall, and the whole stadium issue seems to have defeated them already. On the plus side, the once proud and dominant Carver is coming off their worst season in recent memory, and things don't look any better for 2019. Expect a pretty even matchup, with a nod to the home team. Madison will be defending their basement fort again this year. Carver-14 Madison-12 Mitchell @ Erwin Mitchell went home a little too early last year, and those 16 returning starters still have a bad taste in their mouths. The Mountaineers bring tons of skill, a fast and large line, the best special teams in conference, and the 2018 WHC athlete of the year. Look out everyone. Erwin, meanwhile, is coming off a dandy season of their own, but graduation and transfers have not been kind to the Warriors. Still, this is a small 1a team playing at a 3aa team. Expect a fairly close game, with the Mountaineers pulling away late. Mitchell-35 Erwin-20 Brevard @ Mountain Heritage Heritage is still engineering the WHC train, winning their 4th straight conference title last year. With good team speed, a strong run game, and the returning lineman of the year, the Coogs are poised to have another dandy season. They open up with Brevard, who last year, lost to heritage on opening night, but went one round deeper, going toe to toe with Reidsville before falling just short. Heritage returns more than Brevard, but both should be strong again this year. Heritage's returning talent should out muscle Brevards up and comers. Mountain Heritage-30 Brevard-21 Cherokee @ Polk Bruce Ollis and Co. made a surprise run to the 3rd round of the playoffs last year, and the players want to go back. Polk returns more than anyone else in the conference, 17, and have picked up some key transfers in the off season. With a 200 win coach, and some pretty good skill, Polk could be a dark horse to sneak into second place or even force a tie on top. Line size is a little small, so that could be a factor late in a close game down the line. Opening up with Cherokee, the Braves have a new coach, and honestly, not much else to mention. Look for Polk to strike early and often, giving the 2nd string some valuable playing time in the 4th quarter. Polk-42 Cherokee-7

  9. Apologize for getting this out there after everyone’s bed time...but the McDowell County Board of Education approves former Avery County coach Darrell Brewer as the new head coach at McDowell. https://www.mcdowellnews.com/news/school-board-confirms-new-titan-head-coach/article_7e262c6a-8bf3-11e9-b458-af7c0c12119e.html Expect a more detailed story on this hire later this week.
  10. Ok can anyone tell us how the mountain 3A teams will look for this season. I know there is Asheville Reynolds, Asheville High, Tuscola, Erwin or the ones I may have missed. Usually Reynolds are the top dogs but how well will these other teams look.
  11. Since we are just two weeks away and based on seeing alot of the MVAC over the summer here are my thoughts for 2019. Pre-Season Favorite: Starmount- Returning talent and good coaching helps fuel this machine. This is a team that has really high potential. Dark Horse Favorite: Alleghany- Nobody is talking about them much but they are bringing most of the team back from last year and they had it put together by seasons end lets see if it carries over. Cellar Dweller: West Wilkes- I have heard really positive things with numbers picking back up and kids wanting to play football again which is good but looking at it from season start they have to be last with talent level overall. Who knows with low expectations there is no where to go but up for West and maybe they pull an upset or 2 in MVAC play. Dont Count them out: North Wilkes- ALOT of seniors like over 20! Also maybe the best pure QB in the conference. If this group can find its footing on defense this is a top 4 team I feel in the MVAC. Watch out because they will be ready to play. Destined For a Setback: Ashe County- You cant just replace a whole entire line group and one of the better QBs the school has seen. Thats what Ashe has to do. The Cox kid is good from what I have heard and seen a little film on but nothing is like FNL experience and with a YOUNG lineman group protecting him it could be shaky at times also not to mention they play Watauga and Hibriten in back to back weeks in non conference. Official Standing Predictions: Starmount, Elkin, Alleghany, East Wilkes, North Wilkes, Ashe, Wilkes Central, West Wilkes *4-7 could be flip flopped anyway you look at it as I feel they are all on the same level field.
  12. The season is finally approaching! We are just under 1 month until the first games of the season (August 23) and practice starts on August 1. After some research, here are my thoughts on the top 20 teams in Western North Carolina. Feel free to critique, add your lists, thoughts, etc. I added notes for most of the teams but some I have little information on. 1. Reynolds- The rockets lose some key pieces such as QB, but they seem to reload every year, Getting lightning quick RB Mosley from Erwin helps. It also helps having arguably the best player in Western North Carolina- Jhari Patterson 2. Asheville- I think this will be a big bounce-back year for Asheville. They should have a very explosive offensive with Hillier at QB and 2 standout WR. Defense is the area of concern. If the cougars improve there they could challenge Reynolds for the conference title. 3 .Pisgah- First and foremost the bears have to put the embarrassment of losing to a 16 seed behind them. Pisgah played tough defense all year but were anemic on offense. The defense should be stout again, but will the offense improve? I think they will and the bears should do better this season in the playoffs. The offense will rely on QB Griffith for improved play. 4. Mountain Heritage- Heritage will be tough again this season. They do lose some big time players but return promising QB Randolph and the best defensive player in the conference in London Neill. Add that in with one of the best coaches in the area and heritage will once again be a contender in 2A. 5. Murphy- Can anyone stop Murphy from another 1A title? The bulldogs return talent at skill positions on offense and will once again be the favorite in their conference. Can the next team on this list knock them off after coming so close last season? 6. Mitchell- The mountaineers were so close to beating Murphy and likely heading towards a state championship. If there was ever a year for the mountaineers to win the WHC and state titles, this might be it. All everything QB Noah Pittman will lead the offense. Can Mitchell get by nemesis Heritage and Murphy? Should be fun to watch. 7. Erwin- Erwin had a very talented team in 2018 but should take a step back this season after some key players graduated/transferred. I still expect Erwin to be able to score lots of points and reports from 7 on 7's have been promising. Expect the warriors to finish in the top 3 of the WMAC once again. 8. Smoky Mountain- Lots of positive reports coming from Sylva. Many think Smoky can win the conference this year. They will likely have the best offense in the conference led by RB Will Frady and a good offensive line. They can throw the ball as well. 9. Brevard- What a great season the Blue Devils had last season. The defense was one of the best in the state in 2A and almost led them to a state title game appearance. Brevard does lose quite a bit from last years team but does return the conferences leading returning tackler and interception leader. 10. Tuscola- Hunter Bryson returns at QB, but will Tuscola improve from last season? They play in a tough conference and have a tough non-conference schedule. Its hard to see much improvement record wise even if the play improves. 11. Franklin 12. Robbinsville- I may have Robbinsville a bit low. Rylee Anderson almost rushed for 2,000 yards last season and is back at it again. Robbinsville will be Murphy's main competition in the SMC 13. Hendersonville 14. Roberson- Can the rams turn it around this year? This years time could surprise and have pieces to be dangerous including WR Rodney McDay 15. West Henderson 16. Owen- The warhorses are creating some buzz this off-season. With Saevion Gibbs transferring back to Owen he will give an instant upgrade to the defensive line. Can they challenge Mitchell and Heritage for top spot? Maybe not this year but they look to be on the rise. 17. Swain County 18. Polk County 19.Cherokee 20. East Henderson- The Eagles point up points last year but the defense was awful. I expect more of the same in 2019.
  13. Hey Erwin fans and anybody else who wants to comment ,what's the outlook for the Warriors this fall ? I'm sure Erwin will have lots of athletes.they. always do ..I'm looking forward to seeing Erwin come to Mt Heritage this year I'm hoping it's a competitive game like last year .anyway I hope Erwin has a good year .last year's Erwin team was really good and I expect this year's will have a lot of potential ,but I would like to hear from some of you people that are Erwin fans and anybody else that has a opinion on the Warriors....
  14. We're inching ever closer to the start of the 2019 high school football season, so let this video get the juices flowing as you relive the 2018 Tuscola @ Pisgah rivalry game.
  15. Max preps has us playing Brevard, Erwin, and Hendersonville again in addition to Pisgah and Stuart Cramer. If that’s final then Heritage has got their work cut out for them this year. Brevard who almost beat Reidsville in the regionals last year, Pisgah who’s got something to prove after winning the mountain 6 then losing in the first round of the playoffs, Erwin and Hendersonville who’s speed and athleticism always gives us problems, and then Stuart Cramer who is a pretty average team in their conference but plays in one of the toughest conferences in the state and will likely be one of the more talented teams we see in 2019. I haven’t talked to anyone to tell me otherwise so this might not be finalized, but damn we could be in for one hell of a year lol
  16. Well a new season is upon and I know this late so lets jump right in. 18. How is Trey Robinson not on the NC Shrine Bowl roster? I understand he may not have the QB stats to make it as a QB but as a RB or Athlete, or DB/LB? its insane to have a kid of this caliber who leads WNC in career rushing, career TD and single season TD scored not on a roster with the state's best. This has to be a inadvertent oversight and not a purposeful omission on the part of the NC coaching staff. And this is a call to correct that oversight. Trey Robinson has been a force for Mountain Heritage football now for 4 years. With him as their starting QB, Mountain Heritage has went 41-12 over the past 4 years, and excluding the freshman campaign of 6-6 they are 35-6. The following accomplishments are indicative not only of Trey but of all his team-mates and their countless hours of hard work and dedication to Mountain Heritage football. Those kids deserve the right to have their efforts represented by Trey in this game. Trey Robinson: 2017 Attempts: 344 Yards: 3146 (1st in the State 4th in the Nation) YPC; 9.1 YPG; 224.7 Rushing TD: 45 (9th All time in NC) 12th in the Nation Points scored: 316 avg of 22.6 a game 1st in the State (5th in the Nation) Career-wise: Trey is the only player in NC history to rush for 8000 and pass for 4000 Broke Johnny Frasier's record of 50 points scored in a game with 52 vs Whiteville Career Attempts: 1117-3rd All time in NC Yards: 8552 -6th All time in NC Rushing TD: 109 -5th All time in NC behind McClendon, Parks, Hood and Henry Total Yardage: 12,933 3rd All time in NC behind Leak and Surratt Points Scored: 765 3rd All time in NC behind McClendon and Parks Touchdown Responsibility: 170 4th All time behind Surratt, Leak and McClendon -Passing-wise Trey was 42-91 for 851 yards 13 TD and 4 INT -Career Passing 231-485 4381 yards 61 TD 29 INT -Rushed for 100 or more yards in every game, 200 or more 8 times and 300 or more twice in 2017 for his career: 100 or more yards 43 times, 200 or more 10 times. 3rd all time in NC with 43 100 yard games behind Parks and Henry -Defensively Trey saw action in 16 quarters on the year (mostly in the playoffs and sparingly through-out the regular season) and recorded 60 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 4 INT and 10 pass break ups from the free safety position.
  19. Congratulations to the Mountain Heritage Cougars as Trey Robinson, their 4 year starter at QB, passes Jager Gardner of Owen High to become the regions all time leading rusher with 8410 yards. Trey now stands at 6th all time in the state as reported by the NCHSAA record book. 10,895 Kevin Parks (West Rowan), 2006-09 10,241 Toney Baker (Ragsdale), 2001-2004 9,038 T.A. McLendon (Albemarle), 1998-2001 8,961 Elijah Hood (Charlotte Catholic), 2010-13 8,595 Tommy Henry (Maiden), 2003-06 8,532 Trey Robinson (Burnsville Mountain Heritage), 2014-17 7,787 Deronte McNeill (Northeastern), 2003-06 7,782 Anthony Saunders (Asheboro/Western Guilford), 1993-96 7,220 Josh Adams (Cary), 2002-05 -#1 scoring game of all time in NCHSAA history -52 points against Whiteville -Trey is 3rd all time in scoring in the state with 763 points -Trey is 4th all time in touchdown responsibility-170 TD -Trey is 3rd all time in the state in total yardage-12913 yards -Trey owns both the WNC career TD and rushing records with 8532 yards and 109 TD -Trey owns the WNC single season rushing TD record with 45 TD -Trey needs 326 yards to break Vincent Neclos's WNC record of 3380 yards in a season -Trey is 3rd all time in 100 yard games with 43 100+ yard games -Trey is 3rd all time in rushing attempts. 1117 attempts These are tremendous achievements for Trey, his teammates, and his many linemen who have paved the way for Heritage's successes. -
  20. Two teams from WNC made the finals and both have very good shots at bringing home the gold. For the first time since a loss in the 1978 final, Cherokee will try for a ring. The Braves potent offense and physical defense looks to shut down a very good Veer attack by North Duplin. Both teams can score, although with differing styles, and both play good defense. Coaching i think tips the odds in the Braves favor. AC Reynolds is back in the finals for the first time since winning in 2009. The rockets are 3-1 in the finals and have been on fire the last 5 weeks. The defense seems to be getting better each week. The Rockets are used to D1 level QBS as the have face one the last two weeks. The kid from New Hanover is another stud the Rockets will have to shut down. his 4,000 yards passing keeps that offense humming right along. this game is really a push, but I'm going to be a homer and go with the Rockets. I also want to pick a couple other games with ties to WNC. After Reidsville slipped by Mountain Heritage and Mount Airy dispatched Murphy I thought we all would be interested in those outcomes. 1A #2 Cherokee (13-1) @ #1 North Duplin (14-0): Cherokee 35-24 3AA #2 New Hanover (14-1) @ #2 AC Reynolds (14-1): ACR 31-28 1AA #1 Mount Airy (14-0) @ #1 Tarboro (14-0): Tarboro 37-14 2A #1 Wallace Rose-Hill (13-1) @ #5 Reidsville (15-0): Wallace 28-20
  21. Its regional finals time!! An emotional Cherokee leaves the cozy confines of plush Ray Kinsland Stadium for the first time in several weeks. Waiting in the High Country is top seed Mitchell. The spread-T attack of Mitchell is aiming for another trip to the finals. The Mountaineers squeak out the win. Murphy travels up near Virginia to take on the top-seeded Granite Bears. Can the Dawgs ball control offense control the clock enough to limit the high powered Bears return the finals to defend their crown. I thinks so. Heritage faces a familiar foe in Reidsville. The top seeded Rams are for real folks, with speed and athletes everywhere. Heritage counters with the state's leading rusher and WNC's leader in total yards and TDs. This should be a slobberknocker. This is my upset special this week. AC Reynolds is on fire. The Rockets high powered offense has taken a back seat to a defense that has only allowed 20 points in the playoffs. Sun Valley brings a potent passing attack with a D1 level QB and very talented group of receivers. This game should be exciting if both teams come to play. The Rockets launch into the finals. 1A #2 Cherokee @ #1 Mitchell: Mitchell 38-34 1AA #6 Murphy @ #1 Mount Airy: Murphy 27-25 2A #2 Mountain Heritage @ #1 Reidsville: Heritage 24-22 3AA #12 Sun Valley @ #2 AC Reynolds: ACR 30-24
  22. Heritage makes the trip to Reidsville a few rounds later than last year. Heritage played some great ball last night, Reidsville handled South Columbus. This is what everyone expected when the year began and now it's here!
  23. Hendo peaking, Heritage rolling, Should be a huge game and a great one at E.L Briggs!
  24. Another great week of playoff football in WNC. With only Franklin traveling outside the area there are plenty of great games to take in on black friday. 1A #5 Robbinsville @ #1 Mitchell: Mitchell 38-28 #3 Thomas Jefferson @ #2 Cherokee: Cherokee 28-21 1AA #7 East Surry @ #6 Murphy: Murphy 31-24 2A #3 Hendersonville @ #2 Mountain Heritage: Heritage 28-24 2AA #3 Franklin @ #2 Hibriten: Franklin 22-20 3AA #3 South Iredell @ #2 AC Reynolds: ACR 38-36
  25. Its that time of the year again so let the playoffs begin. Only a couple of rematches in the first round as Smoky travels to The Pit to face Franklin after playing them last week and Rosman travels to Big Oaks for another go at Robbinsville. Despite all the controversy of the Maxpreps rankings we are left with a half way decent playoff bracket. let's make the best of it and hope for a significant overhaul next season. 1A #12 Rosman @ #5 Robbinsville: Robbinsville 31-20 #11 Hayesville @ #6 Elkin: Elkin 46-14 1AA #12 Cherryville @ #5 Swain County: Swain 31-20 #11 South Stanly @ #5 Murphy: Murphy 40-24 9 North Rowan @ #8 Polk County: Polk 24-22 2A #15 Lexington Senior @ #2 Mountain Heritage: Heritage 35-14 #14 Brevard @ #3 Hendersonville: Hendersonville 38-10 2AA #14 Smoky Mountain @ #3 Franklin: Franklin 42-14 #11 Pisgah @ #6 Wilkes Central: Pisgah 30-28 3A #14 Tuscola @ #3 JM Robinson: Robinson 28-7 3AA #15 Parkland @ #2 AC Reynolds: ACR 40-10 #11 Erwin @ #6 AL Brown: Brown 31-24 #9 Asheville @ #8 Watauga: Watauga 34-22
