  5. What was the reason for the adjusted rankings? What do they do to them to adjust them? What's wrong with the regular rankings? Why do they need to be adjusted? A couple teams were in that are not now once the rankings were "adjusted"
  6. I had a very good week, going 17-0 for the predictions. For the season I'm at 112-15-1. This week we have more very good games on tap. For me, the highlight game is West Forsyth at East Forsyth. This is a great rivalry game with Forsyth county and CPC bragging rights up for grabs. Including this one there are four games this week between teams that are both in the top 25. Those games are in bold. My predictions are below. 1. Richmond 42 (15)Jack Britt 17 2. Mallard Creek 38 West Charlotte 3 3. Myers Park 35 (11) Butler 17 4. Vance 38 Mooresville 6 6. 11. With this week's release of the updated MaxPreps.com Adjusted Rankings, the same ones that the NCHSAA will use in November to seed the playoffs brackets, there has been a lot of chatter back and forth, both on this and other websites, and directed towards me personally, through a long list of text messages from the head coaches themselves, asking about whether they (the rankings) should even be in use. I have to agree, with some of the positions teams are ranked at throughout this latest release, there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why some teams are ranked high, and why others are ranked low, and by low, some are very low in comparison to our rankings here at CP, and the Associated Press polls. My question is this; should the NCHSAA use a ranking system in the first place? Is it necessary? If so, are there any ways you would change it, and if not, what system would you put in its place for seeding the playoffs? One of the biggest complaints from coaches, is that there is no transparency with the formula. The NCHSAA maintains that it's a proprietary algorithm by MaxPreps, so therefore the equation or factors have never been clearly defined. We all assume that it takes into account strength of schedule, but from things I've been told, is that it may take into account your opponents strength of schedule more so. One thing we do know is that with the adjusted portion of the rankings, it is supposed to take out the margin of victory factor of the equation, so as not to encourage blowouts and unsportsmanlike play, for the sake of improving one teams standing. With all the chatter about it, it makes me wonder if going back to the old way may not be a better idea, and by old way, I mean the old, old way, that was used prior to 1997 when there were predetermined brackets. I think you could go to a hybrid of the predetermined brackets, with the #1 and #2 seeds from a conference filling out the majority of the bracket, then having the wild cards thrown in after the fact, and come up with a more concrete, and tangible tie-breaker method, even if it means going back to coin-tosses. Now I agree that there isn't a perfect solution, but I wanted to throw this out there as food for thought, and to get the fans perspective.

  15. We some things this week here in WNC. Erwin can win! Heritage just keeps getting better while Mitchell showed another stout defensive effort. Hayesville, Smoky and newcomer Rabun gap continue to improve, and i Hayesville's case, overcome adversity to win. 1. Christ School 3-0 2. Heritage 4-0 3. AC Reynolds 3-2 4. Mitchell 5-0 5. W. 17. Here are this weeks rankings for WNC. Christ School left little doubt who is number 1 this week. Don't let the local channel 13 coverage of how they destroyed Murphy fool you. They should have with all the recruits they have, but could only win by 20? I have a few surprise teams here and there in the rankings. Polk County for example, jumps into the top 10 and could very well stay there. Brevard just keeps improving while Andrews and Hayesville move up this week. Erwin and Asheville keep falling. I put my working model up by mistake, sorry. 1. Christ School 3-0 2. Heritage 3-0 3. Mitchell 4-0 4. AC Reynolds 2-2 5. W. Henderson 4-0 6. Robbinsville 4-0 7. Murphy 3-1 8. Swain 4-0 9. 21. Heritage makes the trip to Reidsville a few rounds later than last year. Heritage played some great ball last night, Reidsville handled South Columbus. This is what everyone expected when the year began and now it's here!
  22. The final week of the regular season is upon us and not a lot changed last week. Heritage, Franklin and ACR all wrapped up conference titles leaving only the Smoky Mountain Conference to fight it out. Murphy is the only top 10 team to fall with a win. The Bulldogs bounced back after a tough loss to thump Rosman but still played sluggish defense. Cherokee won big and that set up a massive SMC game at Ray Kinsland Stadium this Friday. Franklin played Franklin football to beat a determined Pisgah and Smoky continued their surprising season with another win. ACR continues to cruise along and Asheville has proven that they could turn around a tough start and will be a very tough out in the playoffs. BOLD indicates conference champions (outright or shared) 1 Mountain Heritage, 9-0, 4-0 2 Franklin, 10-0, 4-0 3 A.C. 23. Congrats to the cougars on another fine season, baring any shocker friday night we are looking at a 2 over-all seed in the West and HOPEFULLY wont leave home till the regional final! Look forward to seeing some great teams heading our way! It'll be awesome to get the mountain weather and the grass of the pit through November, Maybe even December? we'll see! Congrats to everyone for great years and lets get ready to start up season 2!
  24. Sorry for be so late but it's busy around Jackson County this time of year. Nothing much changed this week at the top. Murphy fell after losing to a motivated Swain team and Cherokee jumped into the four slot after beating Robbinsville. Erwin moves up to ninth and Tuscola re-enters the top 10. Smoky Mountain moves up as they continue their extremely confusing season. They score a bunch with no defense one week then play great defense and score less. They are hard to pick. West continues to fall and Owen picks up win number one this season after several close games. Let's hope the Warhorses are on the road to more wins as that only strengthens mountain football. 1 Mountain Heritage, 8-0, 3-0 2 Franklin, 9-0, 3-0 3 A.C. Reynolds, 8-1, 6-0 4 Cherokee, 9-0, 4-0 5 Mitchell, 8-1, 2-1 6 Hendersonville, 6-3, 2-1 7 Murphy, 7-2, 3-1 8 Asheville, 5-4, 5-1 9 Erwin, 4-4, 4-2 10 Tuscola, 6-3, 4-2 11 Swain 5-4, 4-1 12 Pisgah, 5-4, 1-2 13 Robbinsville, 6-3, 2-2 14 Brevard, 6-3, 1-2 15 TC Roberson, 3-6, 3-3 16 Polk, 6-3, 2-1 17 Smoky Mountain, 4-5, 1-2 18 West Henderson, 6-3, 4-2 19 East Henderson, 3-6, 1-2 20 Madison, 3-6, 1-2 21 Owen, 1-7, 1-2 22 Rosman, 2-7, 1-3 23 North Henderson, 2-7, 0-6 24 Hayesville, 2-7, 1-3 25 Enka, 2-8, 1-6 26 Avery, 2-7, 0-3 27 Andrews, 1-9, 0-5 28 North Buncombe, 1-9, 1-6
  25. Heritage holds on to the top spot in this week's rankings after a big win over rival neighbor, Mitchell. The Toe River War went to the Cougars for the third straight year. Franklin jumps the idle Rockets after going to Hendersonville and beating a very talented Bearcats team. Franklin gets Brevard this week and Pisgah the week after next to decide the Mountain 6 title. With four teams in the top 12 both the Mountain 6 and Western Mountain are solidly in the driver's seat as the top conferences in WNC. The Game of the Week is what could be the WMAC title game, AC Reynolds hosting Asheville. the Cougars are hot and will find out how good they are Friday at Dalton stadium. 1 Mountain Heritage, 6-0, 1-0 2 Franklin, 7-0, 1-0 3 A.C. Reynolds, 6-1, 4-0 4 Murphy, 6-1, 2-0 5 Cherokee, 7-0, 2-0 6 Asheville, 5-3, 5-0 7 Brevard, 6-1, 1-0 8 Mitchell, 6-1, 0-1 9 Hendersonville, 4-3, 0-1 10 West Henderson, 5-2, 3-1 11 Pisgah, 5-2, 1-0 12 Erwin, 3-4, 3-2 13 Robbinsville, 5-2, 2-1 14 Polk, 5-2, 1-0 15 Tuscola, 4-3, 2-2 16 Swain 3-4, 2-1 17 Smoky Mountain, 3-4, 0-1 18 North Henderson, 2-5, 0-4 19 Madison, 3-4, 1-0 20 TC Roberson, 1-6, 1-3 21 Rosman, 2-6, 1-2 22 East Henderson, 2-5, 0-1 21 Enka, 2-6, 1-4 22 Avery, 2-5, 0-1 23 Andrews, 1-7, 0-3 24 Owen, 0-6, 0-1 25 Hayesville, 1-6, 0-2 26 North Buncombe, 1-7, 1-4
