  1. The head football coaching position at East Wake was posted today on the WCPSS job postings board. The school has struggled in recent years compared to the big seasons they had in the early 2000's when they went to the 4A East Regional Finals.
  2. Report from HighSchool OT: Holly Springs forfeits football games, dropped from playoffs due to ineligible player
  3. Last week Rolesville nearly knocked off Wake Forest, losing 31-30 in overtime, it won't get much easier this week as they have to travel to Heritage to take on the hot Huskies. Heritage has won four games in a row after somewhat of a slow start, and they could be primed for the upset if they can catch Rolesville sleeping after last week's tough loss.
  4. This is the 4A game of the week with undefeated Rolesville rolling into Trentini Stadium to take on the three-time defending 4AA champs Wake Forest. Since the arrival of new head coach Martin Samek, the Rams have been pretty much unstoppable, but they'll get their biggest test of the season this week against Reggie Lucas' Cougars,. Wake Forest is a tough offense to prepare for, they run the ball as well as any team in the state, but will be without Shrine Bowl bound running back in Maquel Haywood, who's already rushed for 876 yds on 76 carries, averaging 12 yds per carry with 12 TD's, reports are that he injured his knee when they played Knightdale. They also have four other backs with over 200 yards, and combined they have scored 29 rushing touchdowns. Rolesville has one of the best offensive linemen in the state in Jonathan Adorno, who's also going to play in the Shrine Bowl. The Rams are a lot more balanced with sophomore Byrum Brown leading the team with 1269 yards passing and 16 TD's, and the team has rushed for 1500 as a team with senior Josh Pullen leading the team with 880 yds rushing (9.2 ypc) and 13 TD's. Not sure that I would even consider giving Rolesville the edge in this game, regardless of how improved they are, Wake Forest is still the champs and those kids know how to win tough games, but I think Rolesville will hang around and if it's close, maybe they'll have a chance to pull it out.
  5. Vance County has been very good all season long, but do they have enough to beat Northern, who's very physical up front, and runs a hard to defend spread wing-T system? I've seen Northern already this season, they're tough, but I think a win this week can elevate the Vipers into the top echelons of 3A football.
  6. Riverside has been about as good as any 4A team I've seen all year, and while they may not be a Top-10 team yet, they are very strong led by junior quarterback Landin Sledge who I absolutely love watching play, he's got 2164 yards on the season with 31 touchdowns to only 2 interceptions. Jordan senior Andrew Hayes is a very strong back who can tote the rock 30 times a game if need be, he's strong and fits their mold of being strong and physical. The Falcons defense has also been very strong and has kept them in all of their games. Hard to pick against Riverside, especially at home, but this should be a dandy of a game. If you're in Durham, go check it out!
  7. A win on Friday by Apex Friendship over Holly Springs could pretty much wrap up the SWAC 4A championship. Friendship has been very solid all season long and has two senior backs in Samuel Cabe and Scott Sidney who's really carried the mail for them and accounts for 16 touchdowns on the season. Holly Springs is another run-heavy team that was undefeated coming into last week but fell to Middle Creek, they're led by junior backs Derek Coombs and Dylan Waskey.
  8. Is this game tonight at 6:00 at Wake?
  9. This is a very interesting opening week matchup taking place in Rockingham. Clayton enters this contest very talented, but they've also had a very tumultuous off-season, one that has seen the program come under scrutiny for recruiting and grade changing allegations, and has since seen principal Bennett Jones removed, and head football coach Hunter Jenks step down. Richmond, on the other hand has had a tremendous summer, and has looked very strong in 7-on-7's, and their preseason scrimmages, and the Raiders are anxious to improve upon last year's 11-2 record. Both of these programs have exceptional coaching staffs and are also both blessed with extremely high player participation numbers, and both have a great tradition of excellence over time. The Comets are led by Zay Peterson, a three-star safety that committed to Louisville, and transferred to Clayton from Hartsville (S.C.) after helping lead the Red Foxes to a 12-1 record last season. Jalen Chadwick, who had 926 all-purpose yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior at Cleveland HS is expected to be a focal point of the Comets offense. Chadwick is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound running back who has great feet, quickness, and strength to be an every-down back. The Raiders return Caleb Hood (Jr.) at quarterback, who already has over 4,000 career passing yards and 37 touchdowns to just 9 interceptions. In addition to a big arm, he's shown the ability to move the ball well with his feet, as he's accounted for 869 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Jahiem Covington (Sr.) was last year's leading rusher for the Raiders with 1174 yards and 22 rushing touchdowns, and Jakolbe Baldwin (Jr.) and Dalton Stroman (Jr.) are the top returning receivers, and Kellan Hood (So.) has great potential for a breakout season. On defense, Derek Barringer (Sr.), D'Marcus Harrington (Sr.) and CJ Tillman (Jr.) will help anchor the unit that only gave up 12.85 points-per-game and recorded four defensive shutouts. On paper, this game has potential to be a very entertaining one for the fans, but the Clayton players will have to adapt to playing in front the hostile Richmond fans, as Raider Stadium is traditionally a very intimidating place for opposing teams. Both of these teams have the potential to make very deep runs in the postseason, so be certain to check this game out. COACHING MATCHUP: Bryan Till is entering his third season as the head coach at Richmond, and he's posted a 60-41 overall record.
