    Mitchell @ Erwin

What's everyone's thoughts? Mitchell will have more experience, but Erwin is a 3aa school, they should have enough talent and depth, not to mention home field, to win right?

Where is @BDWarrior at? I figured He would have chimed in by now.

    My40 WNC schedule?

I agree. You dont want to broadcast big rivalry games, because it hurts gate sales, but with all the big non conference matchups this week, it makes you wonder why...

    My40 WNC schedule?

Pretty sorry schedule. They have Hendo and Polk twice, and no SMC.

    Owen at East Henderson

I wish you'd hush. Getting me all excited. I really hope that the whole conference shows up. I think the WHC has a chance at being the strongest conference in the Mountains this year, excluding Madison. Owen gets Mitchell and Polk at home, Heritage gets Polk, Owen and Mitchell at home, Polk gets Mitchell at home, and Mitchell has to play all the top of the conference on the road. All this could make a difference.

    Owen at East Henderson

Whew 28 points! I truely think that Owen will have more than a few "were back!" Moments, but they might start off a little slow. Still, I think Owen's line size and experience will overpower East fairly easy. My first prediction was 28-21, but I'm gonna say 28- 13 Owen.

    Mitchell @ Erwin

Erwin usually has some big ol hogs up front. Mitchell's defensive Achilles heel has been containing the outside on sweepsthe last couple years. I'm not worried about scoring, but if the defense can't contain the outsides, it could turn into a shootout, which would give Erwin an upper hand IMO.

    WHC Season Opener (Aug 23rd)

Welp, it's been 8 long months, but its finally football time again in the high country. The 2019 season should see the conference still top-heavy, but also stronger top to bottom. So without further ado, let's dive in. Ashe @ Avery The Vikings enter the 2019 season with nothing to lose. Coming off a 2-9 season under first year coach Mac Bryant, the Vikes look to improve. Returning 10 starters, with decent skill, Bryant should have his system moving in the right direction. Look for Avery to be a pass first team, and if the smallish line can give Hoilman enough time to pass, he can do such with great accuracy. They open up against Ashe, who is coming off a 10-3 season, an MVC title, and a 2nd round appearance. Ashe returns alot of skill, but the line is on the small side, and fairly green. Nonetheless, look for Ashe to take control by halftime. Ashe-35 Avery-14 East Henderson @ Owen Owen won more games last season than the previous 3 combined. The Warhorses are hungry, and after a taste of the playoffs, they want some more. With a fair amount returning, a good sized, and experienced line, and decent skill, anything less than >.500 will be a disappointment. Owen opens up against East Henderson, who are coming off a good rebuilding year themselves. This should be a good matchup, and test for both teams, but home field should be the deciding factor. Owen-27 East-21 Madison @ Carver Madison is, is, *sigh*, Madison. They have no depth, no size, and no skill. I hate to be so demoralizing, but there's no motivation in Marshall, and the whole stadium issue seems to have defeated them already. On the plus side, the once proud and dominant Carver is coming off their worst season in recent memory, and things don't look any better for 2019. Expect a pretty even matchup, with a nod to the home team. Madison will be defending their basement fort again this year. Carver-14 Madison-12 Mitchell @ Erwin Mitchell went home a little too early last year, and those 16 returning starters still have a bad taste in their mouths. The Mountaineers bring tons of skill, a fast and large line, the best special teams in conference, and the 2018 WHC athlete of the year. Look out everyone. Erwin, meanwhile, is coming off a dandy season of their own, but graduation and transfers have not been kind to the Warriors. Still, this is a small 1a team playing at a 3aa team. Expect a fairly close game, with the Mountaineers pulling away late. Mitchell-35 Erwin-20 Brevard @ Mountain Heritage Heritage is still engineering the WHC train, winning their 4th straight conference title last year. With good team speed, a strong run game, and the returning lineman of the year, the Coogs are poised to have another dandy season. They open up with Brevard, who last year, lost to heritage on opening night, but went one round deeper, going toe to toe with Reidsville before falling just short. Heritage returns more than Brevard, but both should be strong again this year. Heritage's returning talent should out muscle Brevards up and comers. Mountain Heritage-30 Brevard-21 Cherokee @ Polk Bruce Ollis and Co. made a surprise run to the 3rd round of the playoffs last year, and the players want to go back. Polk returns more than anyone else in the conference, 17, and have picked up some key transfers in the off season. With a 200 win coach, and some pretty good skill, Polk could be a dark horse to sneak into second place or even force a tie on top. Line size is a little small, so that could be a factor late in a close game down the line. Opening up with Cherokee, the Braves have a new coach, and honestly, not much else to mention. Look for Polk to strike early and often, giving the 2nd string some valuable playing time in the 4th quarter. Polk-42 Cherokee-7

    WHC 2019

Owen won't surprise anyone in the WHC. We know what is being returned and know Owen is inching their way back up. They might raise a few eyebrows from the casual onlookers, but us in the conference know what to expect. The only "surprise" would be if Owen won conference in dominating fashion. I see a couple scenarios playing out. 1 - Mountain Heritage wins outright. 2 - Mitchell wins outright 3 - Mitchell beats Heritage, and Owen beats Mitchell for a 3 way tie 4 - Bruce Ollis pulls some BS out of his hat, and upsets Mitchell or Mountain Heritage and takes 2nd place.

    WHC 2019

Everyone in purple country knows that it could be a special year, and it will be barring a catastrophic meltdown, or a key injury. I think Mitchell fans are afraid of jynxing anything by barking. Trust me, Mitchell and Yancey counties are electric right now. Everywhere you turn its football football football. If both stay healthy, both have a good shot at an undefeated matchup come October. Im hearing good things outta Black Mountain and Colombus, and fair buzz from Newland. Madison not so much. I will do my yearly preview Sunday or Monday.

    Play Clock Changes for 2019

We had our play clock shut off last season when a particular coach made complaints about its accuracy. The refs kept time the rest of the game, and boy did that coach get some long 25 seconds. the refs never signaled any sort of countdown.

What is the latest word around the conference? Scrimmages? I know Heritage scrimmages Swain, but ive been out of the loop this summer.

Who are the Top-15 best young head coaches in NC?

Travise Pitman should be on the list. entering his 6th season, he has had 4 straight 10-win seasons, worse season was 8-5, 57-14 overall, with a winning % of .803.

    WNC Top 20

Gotta agree with Stampede here. WNC football is defined by the MAC, Mountain 6, WHC, and SMC conferences. Cleveland County is definitely foothills, and Surry County is definitely Northwest NC. WNC football has always been defined by basically Asheville westward

    Top 20 Preseason Power Rankings

I'll take 5th. Mitchell has the potential to climb up to #2 (no one is claiming #1). Room to improve, but a damn good season is fixing to begin, barring injuries or a complete meltdown.

    WHC 2019

The problem with Madison is; they have the pieces every season, they just cant get out of their own way to put them together. They always have size, and here recently, they have had some pretty good QB's. A counple years ago they had one of the most underrated RB's in the area, I think his name was Snellson, but kid was like 6'-2" 230, and ran the 40 in like 4.7-8 pretty quick for a big boy. But a lack of conditioning and drive, not to mention their fondness of dirty play, holds the Pats back every season.

    Mountain 6 2019

I think Brevard can make some more noise this year, and Smoky Mountain should have their best team since the Sylva Webster days. Pisgah should be strong, but they will flop in the playoffs... they always do. Hendo will compete as usual, and Franklin might have a season similar to last years. East Henderson will likely scrub the basement, but they are on the rise. Smoky Mountain Hendo/Pisgah/Brevard Franklin East Henderson

    Top 1A teams

That is a good assesment. #32 was the game changer for Murphy. After producing pretty much 0 offense in the first 3 quarters, he had fresher legs than everyone else, and picked the Mountaineer defense apart something fierce. I think the west small 1a will yet again come down to Mitchell and Murphy this year. Like you mentioned, the offense should be ridiculous, like in 2015 when they averaged like 52 points a game. Our new core of linebackers will have to learn the ropes right out of the gate @ Erwin, but this core of juniors and seniors was a last second 48 yard miracle field goal by Elizabethton away from being undefeated in JV. Elizabethton is a perennial powerhouse in TN 4a football.
