Kelly Holder steps down at Mount Airy (Podcast)

In today’s CP Daily Download, we’ll be joined by Kelly Holder who just announced that he was stepping down as the head football coach at Mount Airy High School.  Holder, who spent the last 19 seasons as the Granite Bears head man has a career coaching record of 218-85 which also includes four seasons at Surry Central High School.

A native of Surry County and graduate of North Surry High School, Holder was a quarterback at Elon University.  Some high marks of his coaching career include being named to the East-West All-Star Game coaching staff in 2008 and being named as an assistant coach for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in 2015.

He led the Granite Bears to the 1A State Championship in 2008 and twice earned 1A & 1AA Runner-Up finishes in 2009 and 2017.

Known as a coach who was willing to aggressively schedule top-tier non-conference competition, Holder has faced some of the best known coaches in our state and more often than not came away victorious.  Assuming that he doesn’t return to the sidelines again as a head football coach, his last victory came against legendary Murphy head football coach David Gentry in the 2017 1AA Western Regional Finals.
