ROCKINGHAM – Two gridiron powers collided in Rockingham this morning in what could be a preview of the 4-AA Eastern Finals to be played in December. The Garner Trojans, ranked fifth in the CarolinaPreps.com 4-A preseason rankings traveled down U.S. 1 to face the sixth-ranked Richmond County Raiders in a preseason scrimmage.
The scrimmage, held at the Raiders practice facility featured both Junior Varsity and Varsity teams and was played in front of a large gathering of faithful Raider fans and a strong contingent from the Raleigh region as well.
It was obvious from the start that both of these programs are among the elite teams in the state, both play a physical brand of football, and both want to punish the opposition with great blocking, aggressive schemes, and gang tackling.
Typically with preseason scrimmages, the defenses are well ahead of the offenses and that proved to be true as both teams looked to anchor their teams with solid defensive play and aggressive tackling.
Both quarterbacks showed that they’re capable leaders both with their arms and their feet. Raider signal caller Brent Flowers made several long runs and looked to be in complete control of running the Raider offense.
The Raiders will open their season next week at home against Rocky River while Garner is at home against Middle Creek.
