The Shrine Bowl is played to benefit the Greenville, SC Shriners Hospital for Children and 21 other Shriners Hospitals across the nation. The Shrine Bowl has contributed more than $68 million dollars to the Shrine Hospitals over the past 72 years.

The game has been played the third weekend in December since 1937 and culmintates the fund-rasing efforts of the Shriners five Shrine Temples in North Carolina and South Carolina.
There are nearly 19,000 Shriners in the Carolinas representing the Omar Temple in Charleston, the Sudan Temple in New Bern, the Hejaz Temple in Greenville, the Jamil Temple in Columbia, and the Amran Temple in Raleigh.
The Shrine Bowl was played at Charlotte Memorial Stadium until 2000 then was moved to Rock Hill, SC and now it is played at Gibbs Stadium at Wofford College in Spartanburg.
