EDENTON – The Chowan County Board of Education has approved Paul Hoggard as the next head football coach at John A. Holmes High School, replacing Jim Collins who only coached one season in Edenton before moving back to his home state of Michigan.
Hoggard, the head football coach of Richmond County since 2007 has a 100-40-1 record and led the Raiders to a 4-AA State Championship in 2008. While at Richmond he averaged 11-wins per season and advanced to the third-round of the playoffs four different times.
Hoggard is a native of nearby Bertie County and starred on the gridiron at East Carolina University under coach Ed Emory. He also was the head coach at West Caldwell High School in Lenoir for three seasons in the mid 1990’s, and served as an assistant coach in the 2006 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, and the head coach for the 2011 East-West All-Star Game’s East team.
Since 2011 Holmes has established itself as a perennial 2A contender from Eastern North Carolina, winning 11-games on three different occasions. Newly hired athletics director Wes Mattera compiled a 34-14 record in his four seasons at the helm of the Aces.
