The Top 50 1A teams in NC.
Please remember this poll is total based on numbers with no emotion involved. ONLY teams with a win are ranked in this poll. If I have forgotten any team, PLEASE let me know so i can correct the mistake. This is the formula I used, very simple but it works. A team gets 10 points for a win. Plus 2 points against 1A, 4 against 2A, 6 against 3A and 8 against 4A non conference teams. Plus 1 point at home. Plus 2 points away. Plus 4 points if it is against a 1A, 8 against 2A, 12 against 3A and 16 against 4A conference teams. 1. Swain 48 2. James Kenan 47 3. N. Stokes 47 4. Albemarle 47 5. Lakewood 42 6. Bishop McGuiness 42 7. Lake Norman Charter 42 8. Robbinsville 42 9. Thomas Jefferson 40 10. N. Rowan 35 11. Camden County 34 12. Hendersonville 33 13. Murphy 33 14. S. Stanly 32 15. I can tell you put a lot of work into your system. However, your points system penalizes teams who play strong non-conference schedules. You could beat a weak 1a team on the road and get 14 points, but lose to a strong 4a team on the road and get zero. It will all even out in the wash once conference play starts.

I think 6 points for a close lose against a 4a school and 4 point for a close lose against a 3a school would be fair.

Perhaps it would, but who is going to determine if the loss is close or not. Is it going to be close on the scoreboard or in the stats? I think that awarding points for a loss is a lot like giving kids in school a 60 when they actually earned a 0 on their work. It rewards failure.
For example: A) 1A Andrews plays 3A Erwin. Erwin runs up 650 yards of total offense, 18 first downs, holds Andrews to 100 yards total offense and 7 first downs. Erwin throws a couple of picks and fumbles 2-3 times, get 15 penalties for 110 yards. Andrews loses 14-8 Or B) Erwin totals 189 total yards, 9 first downs and Andrews gets 390 total yards, 17 first downs. Andrews fumbles 4 times inside their own 40 and throws 2 picks on their side of the field leading to 35 points for Erwin who wins the game 49-7. Which game was really close A or B? What if a 4A school really struggles to beat a 1A school, should we take points away from them? Every 4A team should beat every 1A team they play, right. They are in fact a larger school with many more players to choose from. I wanted to keep this very scenario out of play because it leads to emotion being involved in picking games. I completely understand that no one can take emotion out of their picks. Just look at the AP, NCPreps or any local newspaper poll over time. The higher ranked teams will come from the area where the poll is put out. The AP poll is a good example, the voters in the AP poll, particularly 1A and 2A, traditionally have picked teams in the central portion of NC, it is not until recently that the AP has given reasonable respect to WNC teams, and they are still behind when it comes to Eastern NC teams. If we could agree on a way to reward teams for playing a larger class school, close I would be all for it, but it must be a uniform measure of closeness that applies to all schools. |

Ive always though NC needed to use a point system to determine seeding in a playoff to make it fair for the teams who actually play real teams out of conference versus cupcakes.
My Number System would be the following: No distinction between non conference or conference. If your conference is weak play better ooc teams, etc etc etc. Playing against 1a school -25 Pts for a win -5 Points for every win that team has on the season (win or lose) Playing against 2a school -30 pts for a win -6 Points for every win that team has on the season (win or lose) Playing against 3a school -35 pts for a win -7 Points for every win that team has on the season (win or lose) Playing against 4a school -40 pts for a win -8 Points for every win that team has on the season (win or lose) |

This is interesting at least but not very reliable at this time of the year one thing that you failed to take into consideration is the number of games. Other than that I think you may be on to something.

Well thats easy enough. No team can play more than 11 games in a regular season. Most teams in the state 10 with an open week. The only conference that I know of that reguarly plays fewer than 10 games is the Tideland 1A where they some times only play 9 games (only four teams in the conference and thats about to change with realignment). Let the teams play the regular season and then divide the point total by 10 to even every team out, or count the points of only the conference games and enough non-conference games to equal 10 total games. We could drop the endowment game point total. there are several options that would make this work. Please send me your suggestions, love to hear them and work them into the formula.

Here is the new Numbers only poll with Week 4 results added in. Please remember this poll is numbers only!!!
