These scores were researched by my good friend Roger Martin, HHS Class of 1967, and a walking encyclopedia on the WNCHSAA. He has been so kind as to share this information with me and wanted anyone else interested to see it as well.i am not sure if 1953 is a starting point for the Championships or if it is a date that Roger chose to begin with.Maybe someone knows why.Enjoy!

Tell him thanks for for doing this. I almost wonder if the format changed in the early 70's to four-team tournament, as the finalists are both from the western conferences? Prior to that, the games are one piedmont school and one western (with the exception of 1953?).

It was around 1953 that the WNCHSAA went from two leagues (South Piedmont and Western) to four (North Piedmont, South Piedmont, Northwestern, Southwestern).

Funny that Crest won in 1973 and 1974, but not in the years previous (when David Thompson would have been there...he would have been on the losing '71 team).

Interesting that Asheboro and Albemarle, the South Piedmont power teams of the 60's and 70's, didn't fare any better at the championship level.

I noticed a mistake. Freedom did not open till the fall 1973 so that had to have been Morganton High School.

During the WNCHSAA years, or at least the ones I recall and have researched, Concord was rarely a basketball power - though apparently the women were strong for a while in the 60's, which I did not know.

Concord had a good few years when Robert Earl Blue (former UNCC alltime scoring leader before Cornbread Maxwell et al) was there late-60's, but we usually had middle-of-the-road teams. Never terrible, but rarely conference champs. Larry Woods had some good teams in the mid to late-70's and early-80's, but it wasn't until Bo Brickels came on the scene that Concord became a basketball power.

By the way, since the women's titles are listed here, that one of the main reasons for the creation of the WNCHSAA in 1929 was to provide for girls interscholastic athletics? The NCHSAA was well behind the curve in that.

That one should be credited to Morganton and not Freedom.

Concord has WNCHSAA titles in 1935 and 1947 (NCHSAA in 1929, 2004 and 2006).

Kannapolis tied Hickory for the 1960 WNCHSAA title 0-0. They have NCHSAA titles in 1989 and 1997.
