Default John Devine out at South Point

Heard from very reliable source inside the building in Belmont that John Devine is headed to Clover to take over for Jet Turner. Also been told that SP is already eyeing South Rowan head coach and SP alum Jason Rollins to take over. Rollins turned down Ashbrook job last summer so he may have been waiting for this one.

I would support Rollins at South Point 100% He's a South Point guy and is a fantastic man and coach. I would hate for him to leave South Rowan but I know he's probably been dreaming of being the South Point coach for his entire adult life.

Devine became the head coach in 1996.

Because Rollins is a former SP player, coach, and has huge family ties in the school with his brother also being a coach there.

Rollins has done well at South Rowan when he's had talent, when he didn't have talent it's hard to win consistently.

I agree 84K,what has Rollins accomplished at SR,once again instead of doing whats best for that team and the players,to many times in this state coaches are chosen based on to many other things rather than their coaching record and success rate and if Rollins gets that job what does SP have to look forward to besides mediocore and subpar seasons, but hey this is the backpat, handshake, good ole boy state.

We could at least wait to see if he is a candidate before blasting him on this site. If you guys look at SR, they lost at least a third of their population to Carson. They have a small, shrinking enrollment. Judge Jimmy Johnson when he is driving a Studebaker. Judge Coach K. when he is coaching at the Y. Coach Rollins is a good coach....whether he ever coaches at SP or not...imo.

Nipit most people understand that and also understand the dynamics that have taken place at South, along with places like North too.

What I always find funny are when a coach doesn't win a ton people always blame him but never look at what he was able to do with the talent he has been giving and who they are playing. Yet when that same coach has a good year people immediately say well look at the talent they had.

have to say not really surprised Devine is leaving for Clover. That is a great community that really stands behind their teams. Also wonder if Gaston County Schools building a new high school in Cramerton that will take kids from SP and Ashbrook has anything to do with the decision.

When Coach Rollins took over at South Rowan in 2006, they were not good and numbers were down. He took a team that should have went 0-11 and won 3 CPC 4A games and gave conference champ Mt. Tabor a very solid scare into the 3rd quarter.

He then took a solid group of very young freshmen and sophomores and taught them how to win. They lost a lot of close games with those kids but showed tremendous improvement from year to year before winning 9 games with them in 2009.

Rollins was also a key assistant on the Back-to-Back CPC Championship teams at South Rowan in 2000 and 01. He is a very good defensive coach and terrific special teams guy.

In my opinion you can't get a much better guy than him, he's in his mid-30's, still very young with a lot of wins ahead of him, and he's thought of very highly by his peers and opposing coaches. He has the pedigree to be a very good coach over the rest of his career.

They are building a new school in Clover area that will cut into their enrollment also. Think it will be more Lake Wylie kids which would drop enrollment possibly to a lower class but may not cut to heavily into the football team roster.

Congrats to Coach Devine. He is a great coach and has done an awesome job at South Point. I wish him the best of luck in Clover, SC. Thank you coach Devine for being an inspiration to other coaches in the state. Good Luck!

I believe you are correct, Lineberger will be announced soon. However I heard there is a twist to this story, another mentioned candidate could be part of his staff to run the defense. I think that is more of the story than the story.

So the question is...Who will be that defensive guy for this story to take the twist?

Im interested myself to see who Devine adds on his staff. Appears he is only taking one coach from SP with him...... JV coach at that. Although, I wouldn't be surprised to see him keep the Clover staff intact for the most part. He has went on record and intends to keep the Wing-T but implementing an option twist possibly hinting toward keeping the current staff intact.

I'm wondering if Jason Rollins would take the defensive job at South Point with Linberger being the head coach. Rollins has a lot of ties to the area and is a great defensive coach. Who knows lets get the head coach in place first.

Lowery was a heck of a athlete...I remember playing against him in the double OT SP vs Kannapolis playoff game in 2000...it will be interesting to see how he translates his fb knowledge to the younger kids

Lowery will do well. He's a great mind and even better kid. He has recently just planted back in Belmont after retiring from professional baseball. He has picked up nicely; landed the assistant coach job for the Gaston Braves Legion team and now picked up at home with the Raiders. Look for him to be coaching the qb's.
