Surprised Mitchell is that low. I expected them in top 8 with skill players they have returning. Maybe the line losses will have a bigger impact

They will climb. The line is coming together just fine. Should have another good season, 12-15 wins hopefully.

Also not sure how anyone could say any 1A/AA team wouldn't have a tough time with Murphy. That's just not smart. Gentry will have those boys ready.

Honestly I don't think there's a 1a team that could hang with them this year. And only a handful of 2a teams.

He did ask.

If Murphy stays healthy they will be a force in 1A and 1AA. They are going to get even better I think next year, speed and athlete wise. Folks better buckle up.

Chris...another amazing job of covering our teams and thanks for all your hard work!  Was hoping that TJ might be closer to the Pre-Season Top 10, given the # of returning starters from last season on both sides of the ball and the # of seniors, but I know after the top 5 -10 teams, the difference is very small in 1A. Hope to see TJ work their way up the rankings as the season progresses!

I know it is a year away and we have to get through this season but does Murphy have a suitable repalcement for the qb? I assume they do just based on your post.

yes. The back up this year is solid and the kid from JV is solid. Rumors are rumors but you never know what might happen. The system at Murphy really supports an average QB if thats what they have. If a kid can manage the game a little bit he'll be fine.

I know it is a year away and we have to get through this season but does Murphy have a suitable replacement for the qb?

Currently? no. Potentially? very much yes. That's the one question mark for Murphy next season (other than maybe defensive tackle and the interior offensive line, but there are some viable options there, unlike QB currently) but it's obviously a huge one, we'll see how things shake out.

The biggest difference between Murphy this year and next year besides QB is definitely proven depth. Murphy will be as deep as they've ever been this season, they can withstand an injury literally anywhere on the field and be more than ok (other than QB). That won't be the case next year, the starting group next season will be extremely talented an uber fast by mountain standards, but key injuries could sink them with a bunch of young and untested backups.

I honestly don't see any team from the West knocking off Holmes. They are a machine. I do love that West Montgomery is once again ranked so low in the preseason! If nothing else at least we know that the folks from Stanly County still don't like Montgomery County!!!! West will be faster at every position but RB this season and with Rhone in the backfield along with a few surprises the offense will continue to churn out the yards. Not to mention that the Freshmen became Sophomores and the Sophomores became Juniors. A summer in the weight room, a new offense and the taste of the State Title game has this group frothing at the mouth. Sit back and underestimate the Warriors. We love it.

WM has never been ranked preseason in top 10 from what I can remember, but we like that. The ranking that really matters is in November. And yes we lost Jo Leake but with Rhone and Jo's little big brother, the train is coming and if u don't get them at the first and second level just waive and get ready for kickoff.

I don't think Murphy will be nearly as good next year. Not a dig.

Watch out for Swain in the upcoming years.  Got another wave of talent on the way!

WM1977 Don't put Holmes in the Championship game yet.  They will have to beat a very good Tarboro team first.

True. But I think Holmes should be the odds on favorite. I also will be surprised if WM isn't playing in the title game again as well. North Rowan will be tough in conference but with the game at West I give the edge to the Warriors. East Surry will also be tough. Not sure who else will fall in 1AA/1A. No doubt the title will have to be taken from the East once again. Tons of talent and speed down there.

I'm hoping for another rematch with Swain, and of course at West so we don't have to drive so far lol. It's always a good match up. 2 out of the last 3 meetings have been nail bitters. Much respect for Swain here.

I keep saying it, but don't overlook East Wilkes. I know they come from a weak conference, but they play an infuriating style of football, and have good talent. I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see East Wilkes in the 1aa western final, maybe even the ship. I truly believe they were the only West team that could have beaten WHR in 15. Mitchell tried to run with the bulldogs, didn't work so good. The cards can slow down a fast team and milk the clock, much like a good Robbinsville team.

Thank you WarriorLife04!  West has earned allot of respect from the Maroon Devils as well.

There has been some epic battles but of course we would prefer to play at Swain County.  Haha.

Not that it matters since it's 1A vs 1AA but Robbinsville will match Swains talent in those same classes.. amazing for a school with 350 kids and normally around 28 players on the team.

Agreed in the 10th grade class but not 9th or 8th.

Sometimes it seems like talent goes in spurts with 1a/1aa ball.

The kind of talent that can win titles.

Let's not forget that North Stanly is going to field one hell of a squad this season. They may destroy every team they face. They are a sleeping giant.

(that's a joke)

Hard to believe in less than 20 days Murphy kicks off the regular season. Pisgah and Franklin the first 2 games out of the gate will be tough.

It won't take long to find out whether or not this Murphy team is as good as advertised, that's for sure. I'm sure Murphy will be plenty "good" this season, but a "special" Murphy team will come out of the gate and handle these two teams. This is supposed to be a "special" team. We will find out soon.

I agree!  It has been frustrating watching Murphy lose to Franklin every year the last eight years.  I would like to see them get the monkey off their backs.

Murphy always starts slow out of the gate. Im hoping its pedal to the metal from start to finish. Just hard to predict what they will do. Im more concerned with the line play than dogs ability to put points on the board.
