They will not be playing the Hickory Hawks. Instead they'll play the Asheville Gladiators.

Asheville Gladiators ... sounds like the name of some indoor football league team ready to go bankrupt ...

We play the hawks also. Why won't drain play them? Does that mean we will not play them either.

Interesting!  Apparently they are a independent high school.

Not sure if Robbinsville schedule is changing either.  This is the first I have heard of this team.

Swain will be senior heavy, correct? Will this be a title contending team? Just does not seem right not to have them in the discussion. I know you never count them out. SMC should be interesting as usual this year.

wncbowhunter,

Swain has some key seniors coming back with some young talented players mixed in.  I think we had 19 juniors on the roster last season that will be seniors this season.  Depending on how well some young talented players gel with this senior group, it could be a good season for sure!  We should also have 22-24 players up from our undefeated (6-0) JV conference championship team last season.  I still feel our JV team from last season would have been able to win vs. any 1a JV team in the state if there were a playoff......

In my opinion they can be a surprise team that nobody is talking about in the Smoky Mountain Conference this season.  Never count out the Maroon Devils and the Maroon Machine!

It is almost time to kick off the 2017 NC HS football season.

Midnight madness and "2 a days" are in the books.  Swain will be scrimmaging at Pisgah tomorrow at 7pm.  Time to see what we have up front and how hard our team has worked this preseason.

Never ever ever count out the maroon machine.

I would normally agree..You can bash me if you want. Swain is not a Championship caliber team this year.
Not in their conference and for sure not in the State. They seem to have a lack of skill players. We can revisit this post at years end if anyone would like to.

Swain may not have a Championship caliber team this season but I think if our senior class steps up like I think they will, then we may be able to compete and shock some people.

Swain should have a pretty good idea of where they stand after tonight. Pisgah will be a good test.

Heritage will be a good test for both of those teams as well.

Based on what I witnessed Mountain Heritage vs Swain was the better matchup of the three teams.  Swain had one score and Mountain Heritage had one score so I feel it was a defensive battle between the two starting groups.  If these two teams would have played I think it would have been a close ballgame maybe a field goal difference.  I got the feeling that both teams were holding back on the playbooks. So maybe it would have been a higher scoring game.

Pisgah did not scrimmage as much for some reason.  Perhaps trying to stay healthy for Murphy.  Based on my observations Pisgah struggles in the secondary and they also struggled on offense.  Perhaps it was Mountain Heritage with their size.  Pisgah looks young in several areas.  Still a good team with potential.  I just thought Mountain Heritage was the more physical team.  I wish Swain would have scrimmaged Pisgah more than they did.  I felt like Swain would have beat Pisgah if it were a regular season game.  But of course this is only based on like two series of scrimmaging.  Swain looked like the more physical and aggressive team between the two.  When Mountain Heritage scrimmaged Pisgah they too looked like the more physical team.  But again Pisgah could have been holding back for Thursday's matchup.  My prediction Mountain Heritage and Swain are going to surprise some teams this season.  My opinion, Murphy is going to explode on Pisgah.  38-13.

I really don't think Heritage will surprise anyone, unless they fall completely apart.

They are a solid team.  You can tell they are well coached and have some senior leadership.

I am definitely going to follow them throughout the season.

Week 1 and Friday Night Lights is finally here and Swain will be playing Tuscola at home.

This is a hard non conference game to open the 2017 season.

Home field and the Maroon Machine will be a factor in this game.

I'm hopeful our boys will play hard for a character building win vs a quality team like Tuscola.

As a positive - Win or loose - We will find out what type of team we will have this season.  (quickly)
