Langston Wertz hints at possible changes coming to the 4A playoffs. With the current model letting in 64 of 75 4A teams that is simply unacceptable in my opinion. You may have 1 win teams getting in the playoffs that do not deserve to be there.

My thought: Ditch subdividing in 1A and 4A and have just one championship for those while leaving subdividing for 2A and 3A who have far more teams.

In my opinion though the state cannot justify subdividing in 1A/4A.

Thoughts?

I do not think there will be any 1 win 4 A or AA  teams. Their non conference schedule will allow them to win a few games. There have always been 1 or 2 win teams in the 1 A bracket. My first question is what is the difference in playing such a team on your schedule, as opposed to in the playoffs? Every conference always has the bottom team and the top team, it's called winning and losing. In the 4 AA and A, you will never have a school 3 times the size of each the other, in 1 A-AA that could happen. If there is a consolidation of divisions, it should be across the board, 4 champs, that's all. A decision I personally do not agree with. If venues are a problem, then why not division 1 and 4 go to only 4 rounds and play the weekend before divisions 2 and 3? Use the same venues, just 2 consecutive weekends. Over the years the enrollment gap between our state's schools have become wider and wider. Using the 2016 admin numbers, South Meck had 3,145 while Creswell had 85. Maybe it is time for the state to consider 5 or 6 divisions in all sports and do away with subdivisions. Whichever way it is decided, please, please, please do not go back to the dreaded pod system !!

With five or six classifications, you'll have more split conferences than there are now.  Maybe even conferences that could span three classifications (i.e. 4A/5A/6A).

So what do you split? The conference or the playoffs? There is no way to not have a split somewhere when trying to compare Jimmy's to the same size Joe's. In a perfect world, we would build all new schools, cross county lines and create a large 2A/small 3A size enrollment. I guess what I am trying to say is that IF the objective is to make a safer, more even playing field for schools of various sizes to compete against each other, then there has to be some sort of acceptable middle ground.

The schools like the new conferences so I think that may stay in place.

Going to six classes would be a nightmare.  Five would be an issue especially for 1A and 4A.

The enrollment differential in 1A and 4A is much greater than 2A and 3A.  I thought 1A and 4A sould have had the larger amount of schools instead of 2A and 3A.  1A and 4A have about 75 football playing schools.  2A and 3A around 120.  If 2A and 3A had the smaller number I would prefer to see them go five rounds with no subdividing.  32 teams would be 45% of the schools qualifying for the playoffs.  Subdivide the 1A and 4A due to the large discrepancy in enrollments, sheer numbers in 4A and percentages in 1A.  Five rounds would be 64 schools or about 54% of the schools making the playoffs.

SINCE THAT DID NOT HAPPEN!

1A and 4A subdivide and go to four rounds ending a week before 2A and 3A.  I have wanted 1A to do this for several years due to only having about 75 football schools.  2A and 3A subdivide with with five rounds due to have about 45 more football schools.

I'm at the NCHSAA meetings as we speak. 48 teams in 1A and 4A, 64 remains in 2A/3A.

Yep. The really good teams that get a first round bye will miss that first around gate from a home game in the first round, but, if those teams have a lot of injuries, at least they get a week off to heal.

Some teams have an open date the last week of the season. Not an impossibility a team gets two weeks with no game.

Should have went to 32.

48 is a start, 32 would've been better. Making the playoffs should be a reward for a good season, not a participation trophy where everyone gets in.

The NCHSAA presented 32 to 1A schools but they were not interested.  Did not think it was right that they be treated differently than the other three classifications.  This coming from the classification that brought us subdividing and pods.

Watching a 3-8 team play a top seed in the playoffs is no fun. This is why I go see middle seeded games. Coaches, admin, and ADs will never vote to reduce the rounds of the playoffs. If I'm sitting in on an interview for a coaching hire and he taunts he made the playoffs 10 years in a row, I'm thinking big deal, so did North Lincoln in their first year with one or two wins. But they got beat first round like 86-13.
