This will go down as one of the weakest state championships in North Carolina history. How many more years will Murphy be able to hide in small 1A? Join your big brother Swain and play big boy football.

Seriously?  You're at it again?  Join their big brothers from Swain?  Geez I don't know, looks to me like Murphy did a pretty good number on the Devils this year to the tune of 35-3.  If you're a Swain fan, you're really doing a disservice to the school and coaches and community.  I've got some really close friends up there in Bryson City and Coach Blankenship is as classy as anyone you would meet.  I'm sure he wouldn't be calling Murphy's championship weak or cheapened.  I'm sure several folks from Swain have already called or texted Gentry and others from Murphy to congratulate them.

I would like to congratulate Plymouth on a great season and a tough hard fought ballgane. But it's hard too with all the nonsense that keeps getting regurgitated by a few.

A great game by two teams that left everything on the field.

2010...

And if they're 1AA in 2017, they'll be one of the favorites

This.

My preseason rankings:

1 tarboro
2 Murphy
3 west Montgomery
4 Mitchell
5 east Carteret

Murphy would probably have played for the 1aa ship, and might have competed better than WM.

Actually Mitchell was a joke. And Murphy exposed them for that. As good as Mitchell claimed to be. All they showed is how weak the mountains were this year. Hopefully next year they can finally show up. You guys have won how manys titles again?

How weak the mountains were?

3aa 3rd round, 3a 3rd round, 2a 3rd round, 1a 2 4th round, 1 state championship. Have your team schedule Mitchell if you think the Mountaineers are a joke.

Everyone has there own opinion. This is as good a Murphy TEAM as you will see. No super star. All good football players. Hard to say as good as 86 or 87 but other than those??? first team defense gave up 3 points in the conference this year. As good a d as Swain acouple years back. Gave up 50 or 60 yards rushing to Mitchell and Plymouth.
Offensively what you going to stop. 1, 31, 21,25,34,89,12,2 all have multiple Td.
I'll lay my head down and sleep just fine, but how are you going to disrespect these kids. They worked hard to get where they are. Whithout question had the toughest road to championship. Plymouth has a good football team. Scored 41 points in a quarter on there 3rd round game. They diserve there own respect.
In closing Magnum I sleep just fine, but you sir if you can knowing you have tried to cheapen what these kids worked for and lay your head down and sleep then Ill pray for you. The boys earned it and my hats off to them.

Murphy's sloppiest game of the year (and despite the injuries to Curry) they pull it out behind excellent 2nd half running from McRae and a great defensive performance

Congrats to Plymouth on a great season

it was not a sloppy game by Murphy, Plymouth defense very fast very good , hard to continue drives when you cant throw the ball, The guttiest performance I have ever seen , Joey Curry is one tough young man, Murphy's defense bone crushing against the run , one mistake by a d back in first half, Plymouth 29 yards offense 2nd half, DEFENSE Wins CHAMPIONSHIPS, GO DOGS! This is one of Murphy's best teams period.

If you take away the Franklin game you can make a valid argument this Murphy team ranks only behind '74, '86, '87 in terms of accomplishment. And even though I think if they played Franklin right now Murphy would definitely win, it's hard to overlook that loss when comparing all time great teams.

The scary thing is next year's Murphy team on paper is assuredly better. They have a couple of holes to fill on the o-line (and a giant one on the d-line) but have several young/hungry kids ready to step up.

Either way congrats to the Bulldogs players and coaches on an excellent season and a hard fought, gutty win yesterday. It was a display of amazing resiliency in the face of adversity.

The Franklin game did one thing ,lit a fire in these boys on how hard they had to work.

Unfortunately, the Franklin game was one of two games I was able to attend this year.  After seeing how they played or didn't play, I didn't think they would win the conference much less a state championship.  Franklin punched them in the mouth early and they never recovered but I think it was a wakeup call for the rest of the season.  They can definitely be proud of being only the second Murphy team to win 15 games.  However, I would still rank them behind the 86, 87, 91, and 96 teams.

Murphy Bulldogs
NC 2A State Champs: 1974
NC 1A State Champs: 1986, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2011, 2013, 2016
NC 2A Western State Champs: 1970
Western Region Champs: 1974, 1986, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1996, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016
Smoky Mountain Conference Champs: 1956, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016

well fortunately I don't rank , I will leave that to fans , hard to rank different times ,different errors, and if you go by 2016 losing a game I guess you better bump 1987 out of the best teams. 2016 SMC champs ,West Regional Champs , State Champs , 3 numbers on the board, rank them where you want to. GO DOGS!

Can't forget '74, undefeated 2A state champs. Most who have seen them all would only rank the '86 and '87 teams above '74.

The thing about '87 is they avenged their loss in a big way in the playoffs (as did '91) unfortunately the 2016 team didn't have that same opportunity with Franklin. I think the lopsided nature of the loss is the biggest reason you can't put them above those teams, had Dogs only lost the Franklin game by 1 or 2 scores most people would write it off I think.

I loved watching this Murphy team. Ego-less, classy, gracious and focused. When somebody went down, another kid rose up without hesitating. When somebody made a play, he credited what his teammates had done to get him there. When you talk to Murphy's kids, you'll notice that they say "We" instead of "I".

Ranking Murphy's titles are like ranking Brad Pitt's wives and girlfriends.  Even the bad ones were pretty damn good.  I'd take a low ranked state championship against no championship any year!  Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow....86, 87, 91, and 96, 2016....they all would work for me!

I can't speak to the 74 team because that was before my time but I know they were good. I agree on Jennifer.

I didn't think of 74 team. My bad. They say Willie Brown was something to see. He is still in the record books for most rushing yards in a game. I think he is down to 5 or 6 now though. Like 375 yard and alot of people say he didn't play the 4th quarter of that game. His son Anthony played a few years back and was very good as well.
