Interim HC Mike Gebbia, who took over following the drama over Derrick Minor's sudden leave this spring, has been axed as Rockingham County's HC after a 1-10 record on varsity in one season at the helm.

According to Gebbia in the article the atmosphere there had turned very toxic with an attempted coup by several players and their parents over the offense they ran not being very popular. They even circulated a petition to change the offense supposedly. The administration in charge decided to ax him and nuke everything due to it in part that and start anew.

The Principal want to take their time and make the hire around March or so for spring practice and it's been posted on Max Preps.

Any thoughts? This could be a good job for someone ready and willing to rebuild. It'll take some time but it's been done before as Stadler did it in his time there.

Once the administration allows parents to be a part of the decision making processes, everything goes down hill from there.

Agreed. Seen it several times around here; it can be a nightmare. Being a coach is hard enough but dealing with people like that can drive you nuts. I figured he'd go given the record but props to him for finishing the year.

I feel for those kids; not for doing the drama and petitions, but for just what they have endured this year. They need a coach who'll fight for them and make the program better I think they will find one this time.

Got any ideas of who would be a favorite?

Whether or not, he was the right person for the job to only give him one year should send up red flags... What did they think was going to happen given the circumstances he walked into. It should also be noted that his whole staff walked out with him. If the powers that be allow the "community" to decide who is hired and fired NO real coach will touch this job with a 10 ft. pole...

I've seen a little bit of everything in my close to 10 years of being around HS ball but this is among the most bizarre stories I've seen in regards to a coaching change. The fact they had kids petitioning over stuff both makes a lot of people look terrible not just the kids.  Hopefully that program can get their act together but if they let the inmates run the ship still for a while it won't move forward 1 bit.

Good luck to them.

A lot of issues here starting two years ago with Football program. No backbone at the top the Administration letting this get out of hand and not taking a stand has made this worst!!

Rockingham County HS struggles to compete in football, especially being in such close proximity to powerhouse Reidsville. But typically they seem have good community support. Sad that the parents are starting to run the show. But I do get them wanting to make a change because if they didnt, kids would not play at all.

Have seen this happen before in other sports in HS. Where they (administrators) didn't back the coach. Coach steps down because of harassment from parents wanting a better product to display. So they get what they want, but still the product on display is the same as it was before. Guess they don't understand that sometimes a coach can only coach the talent that they are given.

Who do you guys think might be a good fit for this position? Experienced coach or new coach trying to break in as a head coach?

What do you think happens when you let inmates run the asylum?  You lose Stadler and Minor, the two best coaches RC will ever get.

No coach in their right mind would go to such a toxic environment where parents/boosters run the show.

Rockingham could bring in Vince Lombardi and still would struggle.

Anybody have the scoop on this? Who is the favorite or has there been any big names that have expressed interest?

Every body gets a trophy mentality.  They know if they cry and moan the powers that be wlll cave in and give them their way.  No back bone anywhere these days.  People need to be told NO ever so often.  Especially our kids.

Perhaps some coaches that Branch off of Teague's tree at Reidsville would be good choices. Earl Bates and Doug Robertson are excellent examples of guys that came from Reidsville's program and did a great job at their respective destinations. Robertson is playing for a state title, and Bates did wonders at Morehead and Southern Guilford. A guy like that would still be in close proximity already and have a winning formula.

I agree with Reeducator. Think the Reidsville tree would be a good one to pull from. Also what are the thoughts on former SE Guilford coach Fritz Hessenthaler?

That wouldn't be a bad move. Reidsville's one of the few powerhouse programs that have had solid success in it's assistants becoming HC. Robertson has done fantastic at Reidsville and EG, and Bates was especially fantastic at Morehead. Taking them from 0-11 year 1 to deep in his playoffs the last year.

Plus given how close Reidsville is it could be a good move and make their rivalry somewhat better.

The Riedsville Tree is growing also!! Bates and Robertson have some young coaches on their staffs as well, and those guys are being directly impacted by the Reidsville Way!! It will be interesting to see how this one plays out!!

You also have North Meck's Brad Baker from the Reidsville tree.

Do you think Gebbia ends up at Morehead?

Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't end up at Morehead with Stadler.

Has anyone heard any updates about the Rockingham position?

Lin Stadler left Rockingham County because of the administration ( i.e. principal and his wife) and it would take a desperate coach to take the head coaching job there under the present circumstances.

Nothing will improve until the Superintendent and School Board wake up.

Can't see an experienced successful coach touching this situation, an established hungry assistant coach from a good program would be a good get, but when kids and parents are allowed to rule I don't think anything good will happen, good luck....
