Union Pines head coach Ryan Riggan steps down after eight years of leading the Vikings.  While his overall record is 32-58, he helped turned around the struggling program and have led them on an 18-17 run over the previous three seasons.

He's told me that this job is in great shape and with the supportive administration and athletic department, it could be a great fit for a good coach.

Thats unfortunate, over the past few years you could see the progress being made there. Looks like there will be some new faces in the new conference next year with WH and UP looking for coaches.

Has Harnett Central lifted the interim tag off Joe Salas?

Or Jason Furrie who's been at UP before.  Also, and I know he's not been talked about in a long while, but former Southern Lee head coach Bill Maczko is an incredible coach/teacher who lives nearby.  I would hire him in a heartbeat if he wanted to get back in coaching.

Riggan went 18-18 the last three seasons, not 18-17.  UP made the playoffs the past three years. Overall record should be 32-59, not 32-58.

Kudos to the administration at Union Pines for sticking with Coach Riggan and allowing him the time to get it going in the right direction. After the first 3 or 4 years they could have made a change based off of record, but they allowed him and his staff to work through it. That rarely happens now a days. Not all fixes are 3 year plans like most people think. Some places take much longer than others to get going with wins. So hats off to the UP admin

If Mabe has been on that North Moore staff then he's been a part of some impressive stuff

UP is ready to take a big step forward in football. New principle that values sports, influx of new students with sports interest ( JV dressed 50 this year) nice facilities & sponsors putting up money.

No word about a possible hire.  Gotta get through the end of the semester and the "blizzard" first.

Still waiting to hear some sort of announcement from UP.  I'm sure if UP has picked someone, it must be approved by the school board.  Other than UP, Southern Lee, Western Harnett and Harnett Central will all have new coaches in UP's conference.  Still curious.

I've been hearing the same thing.  If someone was to come up here from SC, why can't it be Jackie Hayes or Tommy Knotts???  LOL
